The new vertical sign was installed in Aug.2007. While reports state that,“ its a copy of the original,” don’t be fooled. It’s not! I will say it looks great though. The exterior of the building now needs a good cleaning!!
I thought that this theatre was supposed to be restored soon.

I spoke to the people at Fox Associates a couple of weeks ago about the possibility of restoring the roof sign. Theey said that, “ it was not being considered at this time because the metal scaffeling that holds it up is very deteriorated due to the age of the structure.”
I also went to the owners in the mid 1980’s and asked to look at, and photograph the interior. They said,“No”. I always thought they were trying to hide something. I don’t think they wanted the public to see how salvagable this theatre really was.

Good news. There is an entertainment company that has the Sun under contract. Plans call for restoring it for a music and entertainment venue.
This theatre was opperating as a cinema until the spring of 1984. In 1986 it was occupied by a church. After about two years, the church either disolved, or moved to a new location. The church took generally good care of the buildig. While they occupied it, the orchestra pit was covered over with stairs leading up to the stage, and a plaster gargoile was removed from the crown of the proscenium arch. The interior was also painted a gleaming “ White”. The building remained vacant until about 1990, when it reopened as a dollar cinema. It closed after just six months and has sat deteriorating ever since; along with just about every other building on the street.

The new sign looks great! Hopefully, when Fox Associates realizes how much the St. Louis community appreciates the improvement, they’ll be more inclined to restore the roof sign as well!

Does anyone have any information on when the new vertical sign mentioned by JAlex will be installed? I haven’t been able to get in touch with the “higher ups” at Fox Associates, and of course, none of the receptionists have a clue what I’m talking about when I ask. It’s been almost a year since the project was announced.
For future reference, please note that “The Front Row, Missouri’s Grand Theares” by Miss Bagley, has numorous errors and has interior photos of theatres that are incorrect!!!
