Your right Bill I remember those giant tassles when the curtains were closed I think they were brown. And Warren you are right about the false celings in theatres that are usually twinned or even quadded. vertically (up/down).The ceiling becomes a sort of stage for the upstairs auditoriumms, examples of which were the National, the former Orphuem, Rivoli,Strand(warner,cinerama), and the Waverly twins in Manhattan the Duffield and Commodore twins the Kenmore,Marboro,Metropolitan, Fortway, Quads and the Oriental triplex in Brooklyn the former Astoria six, the Elmwood triplex and the Plaza twin in Queens. the Colisuem former twin now Quad in upper manhattan uses the same method but the orchestra level is used for retail. This method was popular in the 70’s and 80’s giving birth to now saturated multiplexes. I wonder if the Colisuem orchestra level was ever used as a seperate auditorium before it was made retail would anyone know? .Also was the Loew’s State the first theatre in N.Y.C to make the conversion to a twin being twinned in 1968?

I only saw like three films there and that was in the last weeks I thought the downstairs auditorium was draped in sky blue curtains maybe the changed it to that prior to closing where did you get your info it’s facinating thanks william.

Well that’s all folks we lost the Sutton if you go pass the theatre right now the marquee is dark the films are still listed though.On the entrance door it reads closed forever. it did just like the Astor Plaza did wherein it featured new movies on Fri and closed sunday or monday.

Rhett. they used the exterior theatre and the interior was filmed in a studio. In the response to Dave’s comment thanks for the info. I didn’t know when they were renovating that they were going to triplex it thank god they didn’t it would have been terrible although who knows it might have stayed open a little longer. When It reopenend in 1987 it opeon with “Predator” in both cinemas as well as across the street at the former Rialto theatre renamed the warner theatre in tribute to the Warner twin up the street which was demolished ealier or later that year. to me having them play in so many theatres in the same area was overkill but the National and the Warner at the time were both operated by Cineplex Odeon. One week later the horror thriller “the Believers” with Martin Sheen went upstairs to thetre 2 and “predator remained downstairs and across the street at the Warner. When Loew’s merged with Cineplex Odeon they did it again by showing the 1997 sci-fi film "Event Horizon” there and at the Astor Plaza at either the same time or as a move over. to each. I saw it at the National it was good the sound and every thing but I really wished I saw it at the Astor plz.

It look the biggest and can be more appreciated from the balcony section. The auditorium itself is small but intimate and to me can accommadate high end films. i’ve seen “Mississippi Burning, Any Given Sunday and a day after the movie priemiere was held there I saw "Fatal Attraction” there. When I fist went there the drapery on the walls and the curtains were sky blue and then when Loew’s remoldeled most of there theatres they went to red and grey like the Astor plaza which went from beige and brown to red. yes the curtains do poen and close but they show those stupid slides I wish they had the same throw problem here as well so they can close the curtains. although they do close them at the end of the last showings of the night and probaly open them on the matinees for the day. Well again although I don’t consider this as a movie palace but this theatre along with the Beekman,Paris,the cubby holes of the 85th st east and that theatre on Broadway and 61st or 62nd street I forget the name of it, the more popular and the biggest of all mentioned in this comment Zigfield (excuse the spelling.) are the only remaining single screens in Manhattan.
Rhett I’m in total agreement of your statement from start to finish. the people who run this theatre cater to the idiotic youth market I’m trying to get there to see this cinemas last film but as much as I love this theatre and hate the fact that it will close by summers end I refuse to pay these astronomical prices to see these idoitic films today. I mean what’s the price today for a movie $10.25 or $10.50. and the films are to long and not interesting at all. Maybe the powers that be or anyone responsible for programing or booking if you will would look at this site and yes see that there is actually people who do actually care about the moviegoing experience. I’ve researched this theatre more and i’d like to update my listing on this theatre I originally said it shutdown in 83 but it actually shut down in late 1984 almost 85 and one of the last screenings was “Friday the 13th IV the Final Chapter” .
A year or two ago there was a murder that occurred here . a cleaner that cleaned this theatre overnight was found murdered. amazingly this didn’t lead to it’s demise. In fact it was closed for a day or a half day while police investigated. then reopened contining as one of the longest running moviehouses in New Yorks history. I mean murders in cinemas led to the shuttering of many moviehouses in Brooklyn such as the Rugby in the eary 80’s, the Kameo in 1974,the Duffield in the early 90’s and my favorite the Kenmore in 1999. I think at the Rugby a police officer was killled i think he was off duty at the time
Mike I to as well hate all these new and modern things they come up with it sure takes away from the former movie going experience. I think someone mentioned earlier that this theatre will close as the summer ends somewhere around August or so maybe they will play a good movie there or have a retrospective series there like the Baronet/Coronet did. before they closed thanking moviegoers for their many years of patronage. Retospective featureing the many high profiled films that played there such as the “Star Wars”, trilogy “Scarface”, and the “Raiders of the Lost Ark” trilogy that would be great.
The Beekman doesn’t use slides they use curtains as does this theatre (the Astor Plaza) the Loew’s Tower East shows slides, but on occasion closes theirs and I think the Paris does but these I think are the only ones left that do it this feature is not that important to some patrons but for nostalgic reasons it’s important to me. Also A lot of moviehouses in Manhattan are switching to digital rolling marquees.like Chelsea theatres, most of the Loew’s theatres like the 84thst 34th street Kips Bay and the most recent conversion the E-walk United Artists(regal Cinemas) followed suit with thier Union Sq 14 and thier Astoria Multiplex in Queens I guess the Astor Plz. would’ve done the same thing if it weren’t closing.

Wow, now that’s a super multi-multiplex now if Loew’s can run that many theatres on the same stretch they can afford to operate the e-walk and the Astor plaza around the corner in Times Square go figure.
If I’m not mistaken this theatre is a couple of miles (maybe 5 miles or so) north of two other Loew’s megaplexes it’s a wonder that these theatres are still in operation. they are all on the same strip and sometimes show the same movies at the same time.
Thanks for the information Warren, I’ve only been to this theatre once but it was at an age were I could only go when acompanied with an adult. When I was old enough to go by myself the theatre closed down. but it along with the Kenmore up the street remained two of my most favorites in Brooklyn.
Gary, is there anything from the theatre that they kept i’ve only been to this theatre once as a moviehouse and the banquet hall once and i’m dying to see the restoration. do you have any idea when they’ll have anothe theatre walk or do you have any more information on the interior of this theatre.

I forgot to mention the Kingsway and the Oceana in brooklyn that used this method also for adding auditorioms in an existing theatre building.
