I saw FIREFOX, OCTOPUSSY and SPIES LIKE US here in 70MM after it was twinned. The twin was fine but I’m sorry I didn’t make it here when it was a single screen theatre.
Movies I saw at the Rivoli included JAWS, which was quite a thrill on that gigantic screen. THE PINK PANTHER STRIKES AGAIN (I think I saw it there), THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, THE GAUNTLET, CAPRICORN ONE, MOONRAKER, 1941, WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM, THE ISLAND and BUSTIN' LOOSE. I saw a few after it was twinned including GHOST STORY, the two CONAN movies, PSYCHO II and TANK. The only movies I saw there after it was renamed the United Artists Twin, were BACK TO SCHOOL and THREE AMIGOS. NYC could really use a place like the Rivoli and Loews Astor Plaza again.
My favorite NYC movie theatre. I enjoyed so many classic movies at this theatre. STAR WARS (the first time I was there), ANIMAL HOUSE, SUPERMAN, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, ALTERED STATES, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, RETURN OF THE JEDI, INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM, 2010, WITNESS, YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES, PLATOON, PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES, SCROOGED, INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, FOREST GUMP, KINGPIN, TITANIC, THE EXORCIST 2000 VERSION, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX, THE 2001 re-release of 2001, and the three LORD OF THE RINGS movies. Even saw a few duds like LICENCE TO KILL, ANOTHER 48 HOURS, COOL WORLD, BATMAN AND ROBIN, WILD WILD WEST and that last MATRIX movie. The last movie I saw here was THE RETURN OF THE KING. I really miss trekking into NYC to see a movie at Loews Astor Plaza.
Miss that big screen at the Roosevelt. Saw such event movies as KING KONG, STAR WARS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, GREASE, SUPERMAN, ROCKY II, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, SUPERMAN II, STAR TREK II, INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM, INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE, BATMAN and several others on that screen. It just isn’t the same.
I will never forget seeing RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK here in late June 1981, days after it opened. Earlier that day I graduated from middle school (which was hellish) and that night saw my favorite movie ever for the first time. I also remember what an event the December 1979 opening of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE was at the Juliet. They even ran it on two screens which was a very uncommon practice at the time.
Saw a number of movies at the Hudson Plaza during my youth. LOGAN’S RUN, IN SEARCH OF NOAH’S ARK, SEMI-TOUGH, JAWS 2, ANIMAL HOUSE, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, ALIEN, THE JERK, THE ROSE, BRUBAKER, FLASH GORDON, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK all come to mind. The theatre was twinned in 1979 and closed suddenly just after Thanksgiving 1981. Too bad, it was a really popular theatre.

Now who’s going to run the restored 70MM version of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA in NYC? Nothing like seeing it at the Ziegfeld.
