i remember this drive inn like it was yesterday i used to go here to watch movies all the time in the mid and late 80s i remember the last time i came here i seen a double feature ghostbusters 2 and indiana jones and the last crusade i remember the area around the drive inn was very dusty and a few abandoned wharehouses and factorys around this area also across the street was a big railroad yard i used to go to the fleamarket here also back then . now everything is gone a apartment complex stands where the drive inn used to be the railroad yard has been gone since 1998 the area is all strip malls and offices it,s really hard to recognize this area today..
i used to go to the drive inn here all the time with my perants back in the late 80s when i was a little kid this was a big hang out back then i really miss this drive inn i still go to the flea market they have here on the weekends theres only one screen left and the snackbar is still in use also the old kids play ground on the side of the snack bar is now a stage for live mexican music ..
i see that one person that left a comment said he didn,t come here because there were way to many black kids well i used to go here al the time and i,m mexican and i never had problems here a lot of black and mexican kids would come here to watch movies i have found memories of this theater .
i was doing a study of the mexican history of richmond and recently found out that back in the 40s and 50s on certain nights this movie theater would have mexican movie nights and that all the latinos in this neighborhood would come here to watch there favorite mexican actors like cantinflas and pedro infante and tin tan and etc there used to be a small mexican neighborhood at the foot of mcdonald ave and gerard st mostly made up of ship yard workers and santa fe railroad workers .
i remember going to see empire strikes back and return of the jedi at this theater back in the 80s those were the good old days when ever i go to the mission district and i see the sign i remember with nostalgia it,s some sort of asian store now
i,ve been studying the history of mexicans in oakland and i recently found out from old timers from this neighborhood that this theater began showing mexican movies around world war 2 all the way till it closed down i actually have a poster that i found at the oakland library that proves this the poster ses it plays mexican movies of such old shool artist like pedro infante and jorge negrette this area were this theater once stood used to be a mexican neighborhood
