I love this theater and I think it’s the best movie going experience in the Carolinas. I like that it’s independently owned and operated with a great selection of art films. They sell beer and wine along with the regular concession fare and it has a great urban setting. Although it’s not ornate or large it is architecturally charming and well maintained. The staff is hip and it looks like they actually enjoy working there. I like lining up on the city sidewalks beforehand and spilling out onto a vibrant street scene afterwards.

I am a big theater fan but I totally dislike this theater. They will not sell advance tickets. They sell tickets 30 min prior to showtime. To see Brokeback MOuntain I had to arrive 75 minutes early to wait in a long line. I got in and got seats but was so frustared that I didn’t enjoy the movie as much as I could. I am going back to the UA Beaucatcher Thursday to see it. It has hit all the main stream theaters here including the new Epic in Hendersonville. They said they did very well with it Friday night and early Sat. Do you live in Asheville? If so email me Mikearden1 @aol.com. I’m surprised that the name Strand was changed and even more surprised that the community of Asheville would have had a porno theater! Thank goodness that is NOT the case today!
You need to update some more information. The theater holds only 250. The main auditorium holds 175 and the upstairs balcony theater holds 75. Also this theater was originally named the Strand. It was changed in the 90’s when it became a porno theater. It ran as a porno theater until the late 90’s or early 00.
I now plan to go to Asheville to see the Fine Arts Theatre on Biltmore Avenue and while there will check out the 2004 Gingerbread Competition winners at the Grove Park Inn now until January 17th.
Do wish there was a photo of this art deco Asheville movie theatre as it is the only one left in downtown Asheville! The information given by Chuck Van Bidder is so descriptively art deco so anyone interested in this era, like myself, would enjoy seeing it! And if you are ever in this quaint NC city go see the Grove Park Inn besides going to Asheville’s #1 attraction, the Biltmore House which is breathtaking during the Christmas season!
We are in NC so will try to check out this theater when in Asheville the next time. My favorite style is the art deco theater and this one is just that!
What a great little theater this is. This theater is a twin not a single screen theater as listed above. The balcony was converted into a smaller theater. The downstairs auditorium is a nice size and they have beautilful grey curtains that rise up. Is is so nice to have a theater that uses curtains instead of slides or a blank white screen.
