Here are some ticket stubs from Superman that were stapled inside a book I bought a few years ago. Most are from the Glenwood Theatre in Overland Park, KS but one is from the Northpoint.

Here’s a photo of the Northpoint early in its history, from the Pacific Bus Museum website (naturally there’s a bus in the foreground.) The movie featured on the theatre’s marquee, “Up the Junction”, was a British film released in the U.S. on March 13, 1968.

I wanted to say its not the same without this theatre, I was the Manager in 1978 thru 1981 when Plitt owned it and Managed the St Francis Twin also. At the time the Northpoint was a dog no bookings so saving salaries they had me run both Theatres, Prior to that I was at the Coronet with Al Levin from 1968 to 1978 I was the trouble
shooter for United Artits,I was lucky to manage the Single Screen Millbrae after they remoldeled it and I was the first Manager to run a mulitplex theatre the Tanforan Four Plex. I was lucky to join the now defunk Cineplex Odeon Chain and came back to the Northpoint in 1989. for some packed runs Last temptation and Lawerence of Araibia
George Lucas and Steven Speilberg were at the Northpoint doing sound
tests films previews. all the time , I have to say cineplex was a great company in they spent money keeping there Theatres in great repair, I was there in the renovation of the Plaza twin in daly City
what a great theatre, when the new cineplex made it over with marble on the floors nice seating carpets and purple interiors, the signage alone was 100,000 Now all of that Grand Movie Theatres are Gone . It sadding to see the Coronet closed Northpoint closed, I remember I use to go to the Alexandria and go upstairs to this room where they
had a lady named Clair answering ALL of the phones for The San francisco, UA theatres. i use to help her when the Metro, Coronet, Coliseum, Vogue, Stonestown,Alexandria All had hit first run movies
going on her phone lines would be lite up all night and day, she used a punch and pull system from the early nineteen thirties where u plug in the point to access the call.. those were the days no phones in theatres to answer no recordings just a live Operator with showtimes for those theatres… Memories..I truely miss..John Tarantino

Seeing the Northpoint Theatre, San Francisco, prominently featured in ZODIAC recently brought back lots of happy memories for me. [i’m convinced that the exteriors of the theatre shown are the real thing and that the theatre interiors were filmed at the National in Westwood (LA), California.]

I saw the first real sneak preview of CABARET (1/15/72) at the Northpoint and was amused that several in the capacity audience attended in costume. The response was wildly enthusiastic and the final version of CABARET, except for the dubbing of one word, was almost identical to that shown at the sneak. Later, I saw the second sneaked version of THE WAY WE WERE (7/6/73) there. It was not the longer version that also sneaked at the Northpoint several days earlier but it was slightly different from the distributed version. (As far as I know, unfortunately, the material cut from the first sneak has never resurfaced but I’d still love to see it!) The sneak I was fortunate enough to see was extremely well received and convinced Columbia, the distributor, that they had a hit worth special handling.
Further, I attended the first (or certainly one of the first) public presentations of STAR WARS there one Sunday morning (probably May 1, 1977) and, along with everybody else in the packed house, was blown away. People who worked in the film industry were not supposed to be there so a friend sneaked me in through the projection booth!
On the other hand, I also attended the trade screening of EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC (6/16/77) there. Audience participation/commotion was the wildest I’ve seen at a screening before or since. People were yelling at the actors and some threw popcorn boxes at the screen.

While I understand that changing release patterns and economics prevent the Northpoint and most other similar single screen theatres from continuing to operate, it still makes me sad that they are gone. I’m glad I was around to enjoy them at their peak.

The outside of the Northpoint in Zodiac is close to what it looks like today and not back in 1971 when Dirty Harry came out. There was some digital work done and the interior was totally wrong, the lobby and the screen were all on one floor. The second level had stairs that lead to the projection booth, offices etc.The theater now is a Japanese anime studio and totally remodeled back in 2005.I worked at the Northpoint from 1979 to 1985, many great memories.I filmed a student film there in 1982 and have what the theater actually looked like via film and photos.

Thanks. I wondered. The outside was definitely the Northpoint.

Someone posted saying it was the Mann’s National Theatre in Westwood area of Los Angeles. That they used for the interior shots of the auditorium.

I saw the theater in Zodiac also. I was wondering if the interior was actually the Northpoint or another theater. Can anyone tell?

Recently saw ZODIAC which featured a few scenes at what I believe was the Northpoint theatre (interior and exterior). Is this the same? Did the film makers shoot on site, or did they use a theatre-double? Any of you folks know if any of these great “cinerama” style theatres are still showing films? Northpark in Dallas closed in the late 1990s, and I recently saw a few films at Seattle’s Cinerama.

I loved watching the blockbusters at this theater, since I worked 2 blocks away. It was also my first experience with Dolby. I had no idea what it was when I went to see Apocalypse Now. I sat on the far left side, and when the copters came in blazing in the first attack scene, my left ear was ringing for 10 minutes from the unexpected sound source!!!

When the little monster broke out of the guys stomach in ALIEN, everyone in the entire packed theater jumped about 6 inches out of their collective seats. What a trip.

“STAR WARS was only available [initially] to theatres who had 70 and or Dolby Stereo.” (Twistr54, Jun 20)

It is a myth that the initial release of the original “Star Wars” was made available only to Dolby-equipped theaters. The history of this movie’s release has really been screwed up by the faulty memories of people and the false claims made by authors of books and magazine articles on the subject.

I think this theater was the home to the famous screening of American Graffiti, where Ned Tannen (a moron from the studio)accused Lucas of filling the audience with friends to make the crowd reaction more positive than it should have been. Tannen also hated Animal House.

I was lucky enough to see POLTERGEIST in 70MM at this theatre. I lived in SFO for a short time in early 1982.
My hometown had a twin theatre built in mid 70’s and the audtioriums were a match to the single screen Norhpoint.
No 70MM, and Dolby only in 1 auditorium, the screen that opened the original STAR WARS, It was only available ( at that time ) to theatres who had 70 and or Dolby Stereo. ( my hometown theatre twin went down in 1990.)

The Northpoint, was a great theatre! Single floor, spacious, and comfortable, it had the best sound system of it’s kind anywhere. Major pictures played there. I saw the first screening of “Alien” there, as well as A Star is Born with Barbara Streisand. My memorable experience was when “The Last Temptation of Christ” played there, people were picketing. Huge lobby with a candy counter. nice restrooms. Huge auditorium with a neat standing area in the back which was well lit. The screen was huge and you got a good view no matter where you sat. I understand that the seats went to the Grand Lake and are on the main floor. When you stood outside and looked up the street, you would see the Pagoda Palace Marquee, lit up in green. San Francisco has lost a lot of theatres, and the Northpoint, was one of the great movie experiences.

One of the best movie moments of my life was seeing “The Last Temptation of Christ” at the Northpoint, the first show on opening day in August 1988. Not just the movie, which I felt was a masterpiece, but the surrounding protests and the media circus that followed. My friends and I got to the theatre six hours before the first show, driving up from Santa Cruz, only to discover there was already a small line in place, at 5AM. By 9AM, the line for the movie went down Powell Street and turned east at Francisco Street, while hundreds of protestors filled the intersection of Bay and Powell. Several protestors assured me that God was going to strike upon the theatre with all his holy vengeance just before the start of the show, sending the theatre and all us heathens inside straight into the bowels of hell. I’m glad it didn’t happen, as I would have hated to miss seeing myself and my friends on every news channel in the Bay Area.
