I think I found it. Looks pretty small. Located at Hwy 77 and FM1355. You have to go to Google Earth, and 1956 Historical to see it. It disappears in the 1961 shot however.

Thanks RWolfe; any idea where the Hi-Way Drive-In was located (mentioned in MikeRogers May 22 post, above)?

The Brahma was at 77 (14th Street) & Ailsie and was torn down sometime in the early 60’s. Remember that a Kroger eventually got built on that property. The King was on North 77 (14th Street), near where it joined 6th Street and went on to Bishop. It was next to the old Wilcox Furniture and the Bowling Alley (later the Crimson Palace)and St. Martin’s KC Hall. El Rancho was on E Santa Gertrudis, just about a block east of 14th Street on the south side of the street.

The Rialto Theater sat where the Kleberg Bank is located today.

Sam, that’s great info.

Talked to my dad this weekend (he went to college in Kingsville back in the early 50’s, when these venues were all current) and he says the screen at 77 & Ailsie is most likely the King (I say it was the Brahma); he and I agree that the El Rancho was north of town on 77; he has no idea of the one on Santa Gertrudis (I say that’s the site of the King).

Where the Hi-Way Drive-In was, I have no clue – I had never heard of
it until MikeRogers posted his info, above.

Matt and Mike, At old 77 and E. Ailsie looks like the remains of a drive-in outline. Barely, barely visible.

1900 block of old Hwy 77 was another drive-in (verfied by Google Earth historical)

Also, another drive-in located on E, Santa Gertrudis St, where there is a big empty field now. Also verified.

Hey, Mike, thanks for the info – you don’t happen to have the addresses or approximate locations of those drive-ins, do you?

Rmoreno – do you have any info. on Kingsville’s three drive-in’s – the Brahma, the King, and the El Rancho?

Also, do you remember what block of East Kleberg the Rialto was located in?

Thanks.

Carpa Theatre in Kingsville, Tx. The word Carpa means Tent in Spanish. Mostly Mexican Movies were shown from 1940’s to early 60’s.
It still stands but is no longer in operation.
