I had visited this theater last summer – this was my last first run 35MM experience! The theatre was in pretty good shape – certainly not dirty or in disrepair as far as I can tell, but between the 35MM (they had at least one digital 3D set up) and the Clearview sign in the parking lot the writing was on the wall that it might not stick around for a while. (Hopefully for the new operators it doesn’t stay closed for too long, otherwise AMC might demand clearance).
I havent been in there since I left in March 2004 as the last union projectionist. It wasnt bad then. How dirty and in disrepair is it??
if any company plans on taking this theatre over, they will need to renovate. This theatre is old and dirty.
Drove by here today. Really strange closing. All poster cases still have posters of all recent movies. A box was on the boxoffice counter that said RealD 3D glasses. And not one sign or mention that its closed or a new owner coming in. Also the old marquee on Rte 35 still says Clearview Cinemas on it. I guess Bowtie wasnt putting any money into this place.
Wow, thats a shame. I really loved this place when I was projectionist there from 1995 to 2004. The AMC up the road has always been a drag on this theatre. And another problem was each time someone new took over they kept changing the policy, prices, showtimes, etc.
Friday 10/24/14 seemed to be the last day of operations by Bow Tie. A woman answering the box office phone (732-493-2277) said Bow Tie is out of there and a new operator is coming in. She believes the name is Cine Grand but she wasn’t sure of the exact name or the date they will reopen.
This theatre is no longer listed on the Bow Tie website. Is it closed? Or was it taken over by a different chain.
After 9 ½ years of not wanting to step near this place after Clearview dumped the union projectionists, now that Bow-tie is running it and has bargain Tuesdays, I may be so inclined to go see a movie here. Thinking about it.
Exactly 5 years ago this weekend, March 7, Clearview kicked the union projectionists out of this theatre and Edison, and with it, the best presentations they would ever have. I can only imagine what it must be like now, 5 years later.
Its been 4 years since Clearview kicked us UNION projectionists out of here, but if memory serves me, the seat counts were as follows, (or pretty close)
Cinema 1 320 seats
Cinema 2 292
Cinema 3 265
Cinema 4 156
Cinema 5 193
Cinema 6 193
Cinema 7 155
Cinema 8 312
Cinema 9 292
Cinema 10 320
I remember when I was there with my partner, we always had 100% perfect projection. I don’t know what its like now, since I’ve been gone for the past 4 years. This is one theatre, that in all my 33 years of being a projectionist, that I can say I really miss working in. But Jimmy Dolan and his band of pencil pushers came in, and out we went. So I have moved on to other theatres, both film and stage, where I can say I am appreciated for what I do, not looked at as a liability, like it was here.
Clearview Classics, June 14-17 Grease, June 21-24 All about Eve, June 28-July 1 Animal House, July 5-8 Superman, July 12-15 What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, July 19-22 Goonies, July 26-29 Ghostbusters, Aug 2-5 The NeverEnding Story, Aug 9-12 Batman, Aug 16-19 Goldfinger
I remember when this was being built since my nanny lives in the apartments right across from the building.
The old theater was actually the fitness center right next to it, not the tire shop across the street. I remember going there to see Mrs. Doubtfire when I was five.
The Galleria is a pretty bland venue but it does sport a $5 matinee admission for first-run films and has, as cited above, a friendly vibe. Would be interested in seeing a per-room seating capacity; the rooms I’ve seen there have all been small.
Correct—it is the Middlebrook Galleria Cinemas. This 10 was built to replace the twin that still stands (as a tire store) a few hundred feet away. It was scheduled to open as a Loews, but they pulled out mid-construction to build at the Monmouth Mall about 4 miles away. An independent stepped in and finished the theater, and since he was able to open before the Monmouth Mall Cinema the Galleria was able to play day-and-date with them and still can to this day. Clearview Cinemas bought this theater from the independent in the late 90’s. This theater has the largest seat count in the Clearview chain.
Pretty unremarkable, but inexpensive. Friendly staff.
I think the actual name is Middlebrook Galleria Cinemas.
Ocean Township is its location, not its name.
