Thanks David so sad that they took the neon dragons off the marquess many years ago. Now the front has no color moving neon and very flat looking. Need the fountains back with color lights and some palm trees along with some color neon tubes. Bring some showmanship back to Hollywood Blvd. Same with the UA Egyptian Theatre down the street, all the front marquee color is gone. You have no idea what is playing inside. Their fountains are gone or not working also. Maybe Netflik will do something $$$$ ?

Looks like sometime in the early 1950’s they added a CinemaScope® curved wing to the sides of the old square screen. I wonder If anyone has a front photo around on how this curved screen looked like at the Cactus Drive In?

This photo is the back wall projection area of the large downstairs cinema space known as Theatre #1. Plenty of surround speakers and at a good Cinema West volume.

The Angels Theatre in Angeles Camp CA now has 6 auditoriums with a new small space added on the far right side. I just added some new photos for the Angels 6 Theatre. Will try to get them to put back the blue lights for the glow look in Theatre #1 on the side art gold mine art murals.

Thanks for the photo. I wonder If they sell the masks at the refreshment counter also? Soon in the USA you may see this in all public event places IF THEY ARE STILL OPEN! Lets hope they can get a lid on the C Virus!

Cineworld will never wake up and show the large flat screen to their lighting people so they can watch all the red lights leaking on the screen. Thanks Zapp for the photo.

Thanks Kino, great lighting and curtains! You won’t find something like this in the USA with our tired old movie circuits.

terrywade commented about Rivoli Theatre on Jan 7, 2020 at 7:28 am

Such a great curved screen theatre. First they had CinemaScope® in the early 1950’s then 70mm TODD-AO after that a D-150 curved screen all with curtains, then UA took It out for some reason and now no curved screen is in as the place was torn down. Only one single screen left in all of NYC the ‘Paris Theatre’ rented by the computer TV guys at Netflik. How times have changed, thanks Vindanpar for the back side photo of the UA Rivoli NYC a D-150 Theatre as they had on a neon sign up on the right top side of the marquee. They even kept the D-150 lighted sign up for many months when they had no more D-150 screen. I complained to the manager and got my money back about false advertising. UA got so money hungry in the late 1970’s and tried to sell some of their best theatres or do some of the worst twin jobs in the USA. At least when they ran the NYC Rivoli Theatre It was a first class roadshow cinema and they did not try to twin the place.

terrywade commented about IMAX Screen AMC 12 Newark CA on Jan 4, 2020 at 7:28 am

The companies that do the AMC theatre light install have no clue about light leakage on the screen. They always seem to put white overhead lights above the screen and they reflex on the screen for the pre show presentation. I guess they just don’t care. Same with the red or green exit signs, they glow onto the screen also. I tell the managers just to get up on the ceiling and unscrew the first two rows of bulbs. Some will do this that care about presentation. Call AMC and complain about the stray lights, the more that complain maybe they will wake up.

And to think AMC charges extra to see all the leaked stray light on the IMAX screen before the main feature starts. Do the advertisers that pay to run a commercial care?

Thanks David for this classic photo and just one of a few true CINEMASCOPE® films Disney used in the 1950’s and the Martin Strand Theatre people got it wrong on the marquee. I wonder If anyone even noticed? Maybe they ran out of M’s?

Great lighting, you always send some of the best Europe movie theatre photos Kino. If only some of the lame boring movie circuits in the USA will take notice of what is going on outside of the USA as far as decor and lighting goes!

Thanks for the Cinerama® photo. Strange I don’t see the bulky big stereo surround speakers most Cinerama® Theatres had on the side walls. I wonder If the Plaza had them hidden behind curtains?

Thanks Swamp for this nice Xmas photo. Looks like the projection guys were on the left then you had the ushers, the owners, boxoffice plus candy girls and the owners wives. I am trying to find the janitor but he may have been working inside? Thanks again.

terrywade commented about Re-upload of IMAX Screen on Dec 24, 2019 at 4:01 pm

May be a little bigger or taller then their XD screen but not a good screen to watch a scope wide movie as Century/Cinemark puts in NO Masking or curtains. You will just see the middle of a big semi square screen lit up like a wide blind with white screen at the top and bottom when they run a wide screen scope film. The only way this new IMAX screen will look semi ok is with a regular flat 1.85 movie and then the whole screen is up and going.Lets hope they run 3D sometimes. They have no neon IMAX signs outside the building and they don’t advertise IMAX so many people have no idea they even put It in! The only reason Century put this IMAX in was to beat out the new REGAL 11 Theatre SF Stonestown nearby as they are do to open in a few months with their own huge curved screen called REGAL RPX. Thanks F4 for the photo.

Wow Kino can anyone see the fountain so low? lets put one of these on each side of a AMC or Regal Theatre and add gold fish plus blue lights. People will have something to look at besides the boring repeat ads on a washed out screen. Thanks for the nice photo.

terrywade commented about Hollywood Galaxy on Dec 6, 2019 at 10:01 am

A sad case, just a few blocks from the Fox West Coast Chinese Theatre in Hollywood and It never made It as a movie theatre. People did not to walk up a few blocks more to see a movie. The tourists never went past Graumans Theatre. The old Galaxy Theatre building had some great neon plus THX 70mm and still stands today but no longer a cinema. It has been a gym, museum any many other businesses. The theatre was opened in Nov 1991 by General Cinema and closed as a movie theatre in 2003. Fox West Coast Theatres, Pacific Theatre along with Loews ran all the cinemas in the area and did not like a outside circuit coming into their territory. Still today in 2019 the Hollywood CA area is very under screened especially for art type movies. With all the tourists that visit Hollywood not one old cinema plays older films much except the Egyptian soon to be owned my Netflik. Time for some smart showmanship person to buy and re open the long closed Pacific Hollywood Warner Cinerama and show movies from the 1940’s up to the 1960’s now on DCP with cartoons, previews, newsreels, intermission trailers and reg trailers between movies plus have stage curtains that work. Just like the old days and I think the visitors old and young will come to watch something different. Thanks Riv for this classic ad.

terrywade commented about VIP screen on Dec 5, 2019 at 6:05 am

Cineworld/Regal/UA still won’t learn anything, they put the new VIP wall lights next to the screen in bright white lite and guess what they reflect on the sides of the screen. This will probably happen on their new build going on now in San Francisco at the Cineworld/Regal Stonestown 12. We can hardly wait come this coming June 2020 to watch all the extra light on the preview/pre show screen. Thanks Zapp for the nice color photo.
