Also in the article is the name Misty Sorensen, Director of Marketing and Publicity who was or still is with the Reg Lenna Civic Center so a call to her may just be in order!
TC: The link that you provided on Aug. 26 talks about a Marr & Colton pipe organ that was in this theatre…..“Reports place it in an upstate theater, where it is still in working order.”
Dictionary 101: The Shea’s Theatre in Buffalo presented the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular last November. A beautiful painting of the Shea’s can be found at www.thelmawinter.com listed under Unique Places.
TC: I was in Watkins Glen 2 years ago and did enter this theatre during the vintage racing weekend as they were showing vintage racing footage. At that time I didn’t have the ‘theatre bug’ so I didn’t notice the interior details as pictured in the shutterfly.com photos you have provided CT so will have to look a bit closer the next time I find myself in that beautiful and quaint town in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS.
edward1: Thanks for that LA Times quote! And, I for one, appreciate what other CT members are posting about the present theatre status in New Orleans and surrounding areas though saving lives and pets are of utmost importance.
Ron: So glad that you posted this report here as CT member, Joyfulness asked about the Joy Theatre and a CNN photo which is included with others in the report.
Ron: Thank you for the site you have provided us though my concern is with the lives that are being saved yet we do think of ‘our’ beautiful and historical theatres as well and what Katrina has done to them in New Orleans and the affected Gulf Coast.
I have viewed the slide show and it was wonderful as it did include the beautiful ceiling and the restored chandeliers! This theatre is now on my must-see theatre list!
lostmemory: “The historical Web site cinematreasures.org lists 18 other movie palaces that share the Spanish-Moorish architecture of the Tennessee. Of those, five have been demolished and seven are closed.” This is a sad statistic, but there is hope for the seven that are closed and not demolished! The website lists the sister theatres that have the Moorish interior so will check to see if they are CT listed!
lostmemory: Once again you come through with another great photo and this time its of a great surviving Mighty Wurlitzer! Thanks….again! My hat goes off to the fine folks of Knoxville who restored this theatre and made it a vital part of the downtown area…..again!
TC: The Best of New Orleans website is very good! I haven’t read the entire article, but did read that the Joy had a crying room. I visited a former theatre/Ace Hardware in Hartwell GA and the hardware owner showed me the room that once had a window to view the movie from inside. The name of that theatre was the Judy Theatre named after one of the owner’s daughters. The owner had a drive-in on the outskirts of Hartwell that he also named after another daughter. Great theatre stories whether they be in small town America or in big cities.
ghamilton: Yes, there was a theatre in Concord and it is talked about somewhere on CT, but I’ll have to find it. As I recall it would be hard to find as, I think, it is a bank now and there is a plaque about the theatre in the bank’s lobby.
Joyfulness: I haven’t seen the CNN report as I read that fellow CT members post on another theatre link and transferred it to the Joy Theatre link. I don’t think the Joy Theatre was mentioned..only seen in the background when that member happened to notice it during that particular CNN broadcast. They may show it again as much footage has been repeated. BTW, I have a neighbor named Joy.
lostmemory: That’s it…up and down. Think of vertical as up and down as horizontal is across like the horizon. Thanks for the great photo as you have provided CT with many great photos and continue to do so which is especially nice since the photo feature has not been a CT feature ever since I became a member last November.
Not sure of the current state of the Saenger but a CNN report was done from a boat which floated past the boarded up JOY theater and its heavily flooded street.

Would like to see a photo of this art deco theatre.
Cinema Tours lists this theatre as atmospheric, too!?!
The exterior dome on this theatre is really quite an architectural masterpiece!
CantonPalaceTech: When my husband and I meet you next weekend please remind me to ask you about this theatre not being atmospheric anymore!?!

Thanks for the photos…..sure is art deco and sure is worth restoring for one reason…..the name Eberson!
I have viewed the slide show and it was wonderful as it did include the beautiful ceiling and the restored chandeliers! This theatre is now on my must-see theatre list!
I wish they had included the ceiling in the 360 degree photo!

Yes, the decision to name the theatre TENNESSEE was the right choice!
