To Box Office Bill. Always looking to take the cheap way out, there is a suspended celing in the hallway and in the mini theaters too. After all this is UA in the 21 century and not Loews in their glory years.Theaterat 3 6 05

Theaterat commented about Benson Twins on Mar 6, 2005 at 8:04 pm

The Benson was a no frills nabe .There was no balcony and the only decorative work were some moldings around the fire exits .Fairly large it had 4 blocks of seats seperated by 3 aisles. Always a last run house you went to the Benson because you had to. Nobody liked the Benson. It was dingy and run down, but not as bad as some of todays theaters. The bathrooms were in the basement and always smelled of urine. There was a stain on the screen that was never cleaned. Local legend claimed somebody threw an egg there. It Happade for some interesting viewing whenever an actors face appeared there. It looked like a glob of snot coming from his nose. One day when I was there a woman I was sitting near let out a scream(there was no horror show that day)I asked her what was wrong and she pointed to a large mouse in the aisle. We tried to see the manager but he was not in. I swore I would never go back. Even after the theater was modernized as a twin, lack of interest kept me away. I understand there was no great loss when it closed in 1988 and became another Rite Aid drugstore. Theaterat 3 6 05

was Ben Hur itself.Although I have seen it many times on tv and video, it just cannot be appreciated until you see it on the big screen.Awesome,in a word. This was worth the trip from Brooklyn.Parking was easy and cheap . My mother who I took with me probably enjoyed the experience even more than I.All I can say is that any movie and theater fan who does not come here at least once is missing the movie experience as it should be experienced.Theaterat 3 6 06

Theaterat commented about New Boro Park Theatre on Mar 6, 2005 at 7:01 pm

The Boro park was a classy, elegant theater that opened in 1917.There were marble box seats on either sude of the proscenium and a domed celing. There was a chandelier that hung from the celing and the balcony curved in a graceful arch. There were opera house l[ke seats in the wings. The seats seemed a bit larger than average. There was no seperate entrance from the lobby to the proscenium so you could see and hear your movie if you got up to get a snack. There also was a marble stairway with a red carpet that led to the balcony. The theater resembled an opera house that one would see in Rome or Vienna. Even in its waning days in the late sixties it was always kept very clean. The theater wich was once owned by Loews showed double features and an occasional foreign art film. They also had Yiddish shows from time to time for the then buorgeoning Hassidic community.Ironically enough, the Hassidic community put pressure on the Boro Park and the nearby 46th St. to close on the Sabbath. From the mid to late sixties I saw movies like The great Race. Darling,Promise Her Anything. The Battle of the Bulge,The Professionals,Bonnie and Clyde and others. The last movie I saw there was the OddCouple in 68. Shortly after that they started to show porn. It was boarded up by 1970. The theater got a nasty surprise for her 55th birthday. It was totally leveled to the ground.A new post office opened there. Like so many others she is gone but not forgotten. Theaterat 3 6 05

Went to the Alpine recently. The theater is absolutely the worst Cinematic experience I ever had.Inside you loose all sense of direction. The theater is bisected by a long narrow corridor with ultra mini theaters on either side.It reminds one of a walk mthrough a funhouse, but it aint fun. Each mini theater has too many broken seats and a flypaper sticky substance on the floor from spilt soda and other things they sell to eat.The sound was inaudible and the heat was turned all the way up. It was so filthy that it gave me the creeps.I swear that I will never go again even if they give me a free lifetime pass.

When I was 12, I wanted to see the James Bond movie Goldfinger. My mother who read the Catholic Legion of Decency movie ratings in the Tablet objected because she thought it was too adult or sexy,so she said no. Anyway one Saturday night her and her friend Josie went to the Deluxe to see it. The next day I asked her if it was ok for my younger brother and I to see. She said yes, but she never knew that I had already seen it 3 times before at the Alpine theater. It was about two weeks before Easter. We walked to the Deluxe and it cost 65cents to get in. At the theater.I met a friend from school who was there with his sister. We sat together and stayed for it twice. They also had a short subject(remember them ) about Greece. I enjoyed Goldfinger even more the 4th time. We all had a goiod time. Tell me honestly-how many of todays movies are worth seeing more than once?
