The article is incorrect in stating that the building was demolished; it is still there, across a parking lot from the mentioned supermarket.
The former Parkside in San Francisco for awhile had an unusual combination use; the lower auditorium level was used for day care, while the balcony seating was retained for evening theater/movie screening use.
The former Alabama in Houston and the former Runnymede in Toronto are bookstores. Both of these former theaters have pages here on CT and both pages have links to pictures.
It is possible that there was, at some point, some address renumbering. When I used to go there in the early 70s, that stretch of South Cedar Street was still rather rural with large gaps between the businesses which were mostly farmer’s markets, mom-and-pop motels, and occasionally a car lot. It really did not start to get built up until the later 80s and early 90s.
The matter is even more confusing by looking at the Grand Opening advertisement on the Water Winter Wonderland site; according to the ad, the address was 5509 S. Cedar.
Current telephone directories show an optometrist’s office at this address. Probably the building was torn down and replaced with an office/store block or was converted to retail/office space.
After reading the article, it really does not sound as if there is likely to be any “new life” for the theater; it sounds more like someone just wants the site for redevelopment. I went to this theater several times and one could hardly put “two hotels, restaurants, and shops” on that site without tearing the multiplex down.
Because a number of previous links to pictures of the theatre from the Ontario Archives have died, here is a complete updated set of pictures from 1941 when it was Loew’s London:
