Three strip is the only way to see Cinerama. Still remember seeing How The West Was Won in that format. They would have to cut half the seats out of the Ziegfeld to show three strip and they would never do that.

Any chance they could program some recent classics there. Would love to see a film like Titanic on that big screen. They should try to get the new Harry Potter movie. Bet they could make money showing that film.
Its a shame that this theatre will be closed. There is nothing like seeing a film in a large single-screen theatre. When the Astor and The State are closed there will be no movie theatres on Broadway in the Times Square area. Very Sad.
When they screened the Donavan Affair they had a full cast reading of the script with sound effects. I was there and it was really something. They just had a 3D festival and it was great to see films in that format.
I was in this theatre after it was converted to a roller rink. Originally you could see the theatre ceiling and interior walls. In the mid 1960’s they put in a second floor for a bowling alley and destroyed all the remaining movie decor.
A great theatre. I saw Titanic there in 1997. Very wide screen. The seats in the upper theatre where on a very steep incline. It was almost like stadium seating.
Several years after the Oriental closed NBC filmed several scenes of a made for TV movie outside the theatre. They even put phony movie titles on the marque. You can also see the Oriental during the chase scene from “The French Connection.”
You would think for the prices they charge we would not have to sit through 10+ minutes of commercials. It is really annoying.

The old RKO marquee is gone.
The auditorium has been used for a flea market and snack bar in recent years. Used entrance on Jerome Ave. Not sure if it is in use now.

Anyone know if this was the theatre that was converted to a roller skating rink. (The Brooklyn Roll-o-Rama)?

In the early 1960’s they used to run special kids shows on Saturday afternoons. I think they started XXX movies around 1979.
I went to this theatre in the 1960’s. It had an orchestra pit that was visible untill the theatre was twinned.
