phillysantella :

You’re most welcome to the TZ updates. I’m glad you’re keeping an eye open for repeats, but, if you don’t want to wait for repeats to see these episodes again, you can click on the IMDb links I provided, and read about them, in depth, if you wish.

The links will also give you the next dates those episodes will be broadcast on the Sci Fi Channel.

Which Franklin K Lane did you attend : the one that is still there in Cypress Hills near Dexter Court, Elderts Lane and 75th Street, or the earlier one my dad remembers at Evergreen Avenue and Covert St. in Bushwick ?

Also, where was the E.N.Y. Vocational High that you attended ? My dad went there also, 1933-37.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Muzer :

Thanks for the additional details of your life in Bklyn.

My time in Ridgewood (Cornelia between Wyckoff and Cypress) 1955 – 1999, roughly corresponds to yours in ENY / Cypress Hills. A high school classmate and, later, friend of mine at St. Francis Prep in Williamsburg, 1969-73, Frank Lombardo, was from St. Rita’s parish.

I also remember a Baerenklau Oil Company on the corner of Jamaica and Chestnut, circa Christmas 1966, from a visit to my dad’s parents and sister at 169 Chestnut St.

I, too, recall the name Shemp as one of the Stooges. What about Joe (Besser) ?

In summer 1989 I saw the Three Stooges' short feature “Flying Saucer Daffy” at NYC’s Film Forum, on a double bill with the serious sci fi UFO invasion movie, “Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers”. The Stooges came first, making it well-nigh impossible for the audience to take the full-length, Fred F. Sears-directed, Ray Harryhausen FX'ed film seriously.

Except me, of course !

D-O-O-O-O-C-T-O-O-O-RRRR M-A-A-A-R-V-I-I-I-I-NNNN !

Billburg, have you been to Loew’s Jersey in Jersey City since its gala re-opening ?

He was a WPIX regular whose on-camera costume was that of an old-fashioned, dark blue, brass-buttoned policeman’s tunic, and peaked cap. He hosted The Three Stooges on WPIX Channel 11 NYC in the early 1960’s, and, before showing them, would caution the boys and girls watching not to try the Three Stooges' stunts, like eye-boinking, face-slapping and head-knocking, pouring water into electrical outlets, plugging appliances into faucets, because they could get badly hurt if they did.

A friend of mine used to think that The Three Stooges were the last word on the human condition, that they had said it all, and so interviewed and photographed them for his high school newspaper, in New Jersey, circa 1961.

Remember “Officer” Joe Bolton, on WPIX Channel 11, cautioning us kiddies not to try their stunts ourselves ?

Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk !

Thanks for posting that, Panzer65 !

My corresponding experience would be having seen “Three Stooges In Orbit” at the RKO Madison in summer 1961, on a double bill with “Mothra”.

One of my favorite Three Stooges lines :

Moe, to the other two, as they enter a party :

“Mingle ! Or I’ll mangle !”

Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk !

Whoo hoo hoo !

“HANG HUANG” is about all I’m aware of right now, Panzer65.

But even the desolation, desecration, abandonment and waste of RKO Keith’s in Flushing must eventually give way to the law of supply and demand, and economics in general.

Oh, I’m not much of a baseball fan at all. I was just going with the flow.

Or, as there is a CT member with this handle, I should probably also say :

Let’s go, Metz !

Glad you liked the stem cell humor !

I can’t help but wonder if a similar stalemate exists for the vacant RKO Keith’s in otherwise busy and booming downtown Flushing, Queens.

You’re right, Anniegirl ! Not making a cent : it would be a fitting comeuppance : in the Cinema Zone !

phillysantella :

You may have seen Twilight Zone shows “Walking Distance” and “Kick The Can” and are just not remembering them right now. You can still see them on TV (Sci Fi Channel), albeit edited and interrupted, or get them uncut and uninterrupted on VHS or DVD.

Here are links to Internet Movie Database pages on both episodes :

Thanks, Warren. I remember first reading the term “main stem” in spring 1971, in reference to Manhattan’s theater district, in a somewhat older book (perhaps first printed in the 1950’s, and perhaps quoting an even older magazine or newspaper article) I had borrowed then from the Ridgewood library.

The latest Webster’s Collegiate Dictionaries include slang terms, and (if known) the approximate date the term entered common usage.

Example : “balance of terror” (1960).

Slalom, chow, and ex officio.

Congratulations, Muzer ! Yes, you really are spanning different generations !

I tend to think of myself that way. On nycsubway.org’s “SubTalk”, my handle was “Nostalgiaddict”. I also referred to myself as “Nostalgi Agonistes” (after Shelley’s “Samson Agonistes” and T.S. Eliot’s “Sweeney Agonistes”) bridging the gaps between past, present and future.

Good idea, Lost Memory ! Now it’s a power supply issue !

Ten billion gigawatts into the flux capacitor! Right from the third rail of the Jamaica el ! And right down that center track !

Lost Memory, that’s good to know about what Google will find for you.

Muzer, phillysantella, MVitale, have any of you seen the classic Twilight Zone episodes “Walking Distance” and “Kick The Can”, both about being young again ?

“OLLIE OLLIE OXEN FREE !”

I know what you mean, Muzer, because of all the expensive hi-tech games my son has.

How old are you, Muzer ?

“Rodan” was released in the USA in 1957 :

saps, whose chest do you prefer, King Kong’s or Jayne Mansfield’s ? How about Fay Wray ?

Yes, Lost Memory, you may attend a service at the Tabernacle Of Prayer. Now, how do we get you back in time 30 or more years ?

Some creature running amok, Jayne Mansfield ? How about “Attack Of The Fifty Foot Woman” ? She went looking for Harry inside the Valencia, and damaged the El in so doing !
