Happy and Healthy Holiday wishes to everyone at the Lafayette family.

Looking forward to many film classics in 2014.

The DCP presentation of THE GODFATHER was outstanding. Hope the good run continues

Hello, Is there any chance for some type of incarnation of the “Horror-Thon” this year?

I think some are missing the obvious here; it would be nice if they had 35mm print, but at least they still have the beauty of the Lafayette to offer. It will still be better than seeing The Godfather in digital at some 100 seat sticky floor, crackerbox multiplex or at home.

You are so right Peter. We just got our Christie Digital installed at the Basie 2 weeks ago. They also got a nice new Blu-ray player up there too. So you know that everything now will be either DCP or Blu-ray. Very sad indeed.

If I had to guess – and I am guessing – more than likely they asked Paramount Pictures for their top-grossing “classic” titles that are on DCP instead of 35mm. The majority of their audience isn’t concerned with the presentation format, as sad as that might be.

Well, I guess you would be the one to know then. Nice plug for Loews too, Mitch.

Paramount definitely has 35mm titles available, as ongoing screenings at The Landmark Loews Jersey, The Film Forum, and The Museum Of The Moving Image will attest.

Bolorkay, the entire series will be shown on video because that’s all Paramount has available. All the titles are now handled thru Paramount with no 35mm available. Welcome to the new reality. Wake up!

I’m hoping and praying that the video only possibilities for the up-coming season don’t entirely pan out. (Any thoughts from the new folks who are currently running the Lafayette?) It seems to me that there still might be “some” 35mm prints still available (perhaps not as many as in the past.)for exhibition. Case in point….. that beautiful print of Welles' “The Stranger” that was shown last season at the Lafayette. Seeing it in 35mm gave me a whole new perspective on a film that I have never cared for when shown strictly on TCM. Here’s hoping that 35mm can still be a viable medium at the Lafayette.

Unfortunately, it is my understanding that this fall’s entire series at the Lafayette is going to presented on video. I guess this leaves The Landmark Loews Jersey as the last venue in the area west of the Hudson still running classic films in 35mm. Nelson and Pete will be missed.

Very happy to see that Classic Films still have a place at the Lafayette. Quite a nice and varied line-up. (Fellini, anyone?) I’m hoping that the “Horror-Thon” will make a return, as well. (Can’t remember the last time I saw “Dracula’s Daughter” and “House of Frankenstein” on a local big screen. Except, of course at the Lafayette.)

Email today- (shortened a bit) Our good friend and theater impresario Nelson Page has retired, and is no longer operating the Lafayette Theater. The Town of Ramapo and the Benmosche Family are currently handling film bookings and all theater operations.

I am proud to announce that the Town of Ramapo Fall Film Festival 2013 (formally the Big Screen Classics) will begin on Saturday, October 19, 2013 with a special screening of The Godfather starring Marlon Brando. Jeff Barker, the Lafayette Theater Organist, will once again provide us with pre-film musical entertainment playing the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ. All films will begin at 11:30 AM and the pre-show Concert at 11:00 AM. Ramapo senior citizens free admission (with card), all other tickets will be $8.00.

Ramapo Fall Film Festival 2013 will feature the following Paramount Studio titles:

October 19th The Godfather (1972) October 26th Grease (1978) November 2nd La Dolce Vita (1960)
November 9th Stalag 17 (1953) November 16th Sunset Boulevard (1950) November 23rd Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981) – November 30th Dream Girls (2006) December 7th High Noon (1952) December 14th It’s A Wonderful Life (1946) – James Stewart, Donna Reed

We had a couple of years where we would break even over the course of the season with the classics, but mostly because of It’s a Wonderful Life or Wizard of Oz. The past several years saw a declining paying audience at the shows. And the special weekend events like the Horror-Thon were never money makers at all for us.

Hi, I’m just thinking out loud , but I wonder how economically “viable” Big Screen Classics has been over the years for the Lafayette? Even though I’m only two years from my official senior “status” I have been and always will be happy to pay for a ticket to the Big Screen Classics program if this means preserving this or any form of “classic” film program. (As I understand it the “senior” audiences who seem to make up the majority of the audiences at these Saturday morning programs get in for free if they live within the community.) Not wishing to seem insensitive but I hope that the preservation of classic films at the Lafayette will always be a priority.

Not at all Rhett, as far as I know the theatre will continue the Saturday morning shows though the series will not be called “Big Screen Classics” any longer.

Good question, MD. My gut feeling is that they will be screening DCP for the most part.

Thanks Mark. Should be interesting to see the digital down at the Basie. Hopefully it means they run more movies, though some of the magic will be lost if its not on film.

So sorry to hear this Peter. Its Mark here from the Count Basie. We are just getting ready to install a digital down there. Contact me if you like, .

For me, the big question for the Lafayette’s classic film series, should the new management choose to continue it, is whether they will continue to book 35mm film prints, or just run “digital” video. I can watch “digital” video at home.

Certainly sounds like the death knell for Big Screen Classics.

Thanks for your kind words. No, I am not involved with the programming at the Lafayette any longer.

Hi Peter, Certainly sad to hear that Nelson will no longer be a part of the Lafayette. His “intros” to each of the BSC films certainly added so much to the experience. (Will you continue to help program the Sat. “Big Screen Classics”? Sure hope so.) But happy to hear that Ramapo will continue its support of “Big Screen Classics” (Let’s hope they do the same with the “The Horror-Thon”…an integral part of “Big Screen Classics”, IMHO!) I’ll certainly be there to support the Lafayette. I’ve said it countless times but the local, single-screen theatre is the heart of any community and it’s wonderful to have a group such as the Benmosche family who support this. Anything a film fan can do to help this theatre? (Besides buying tickets.) Please let me know.

Just to update, as of July 2013 Majestic-Star Entertainment and Nelson Page are no longer the operators of the Lafayette Theatre. The Benmosche family will continue to operate the Lafayette with first-run movies and the Town of Ramapo is planning to continue to sponsor the Saturday morning classic movie series. Thanks for all the support on CT – we had a great 10 years up there! Please continue to support the Lafayette.

As of now, they do not have a new website; the new phone number for the box office is 845-547-2121.

Thanks Peter,

Seems like a logical addition to this year’s Horror-Thon. (“All Harryhausen, All The Time !!”) I hope something materializes.

Perhaps at the next Horror-Thon, bolorkay.

Hi Peter, As I’m sure you are aware, today is truly a sad day with the passing of a true hero to many of us, Ray Harryhausen. Not wishing to be too over-bearing but would it be possible for the Lafayette to mount a Harryhausen tribute as an extension of Big Screen Classics in honor of this film pioneer?
