Yes I went there many times, it was actually called Johnny all-weather drive in. It had an indoor screen as well that UA closed a few years before it closed the drive-in. The last summer this place was open the screen was so dirty the picture was very dark, but one thing I remember the screen was HUGE like Route-110 was.
What about a floating screen that would be in front of the proscenium? It could still be draped, somewhat like how the Cinerama conversions were. Say is the downstairs in The Metro big enough for Cinerama?

Thanks, I also recall that when Brandt pulled out off all the theatres they were run for a very short time by another company. This must be associated with them because the theatres were being listed in the papers as Cine-Selwyn, Cine-Lyric etc. Do you recall how many screens the Cine-42 had?
It was near the New Amsterdam and open a very short time. Everyone knew the whole block was coming down. I have to check some of my old booking records and see if any of their grosses are on any of the sheets.
There was another theatre on 42nd street that ran video of these type of films. I think then when Brandt closed all the big houses they put in 35mm projectors and ran double bills. he name escapes me. Was it Cine 42 or something? Another theatre not on here is the 42 St Harem.

This theatre closed for good in March of 1996, just shy of it’s second year in business.
I think Long Island could still support a drive-in if you could find a peice of property that was not going to be considered “gold” in a few years.
Also, the theater no longer has a curtain.

God forbid they keep one house looking like a real movie theatre with a curtain.
This still looks like not much has been done from the outside, but it’s hard to really tell with all the scafolding.

It’s funny you mention looking at the building. I did the same thing as a kid and always thought this had to have been a theatre at one time.
I cant swear but I think it’s a restaurant
Thanks Nick
Was anyone ever in here when it was a movie house? I would like to know what the place was like?
Ah thats the one I was thinking of Movie-plex 42.

Wait, of all names could it have been the Roxy?

Is the mall theatre listed in here, I dont see it?
How ironic, because the old Hippodrome Theatre on 6th Avenue in Manhattan was also demolished for parking. That lot bears the name Hippodrome garage.
Who’s idea was it to paint this place that awful green?
One question was that the Loews Commodore in the village or the Commodore in Brooklyn? I am guessing Manhattan.
Those certainly were the great years of movie theatres. Try to get a star of Jolsons calibar to even come to one theatre, none the less 6 a day.
What killed these two houses?
The Tomkat was a Pussycat cinema years ago right? Are all the Pussycat theatres gone? Does anyone know how big the circt was in its prime?
Nick
What are blue bottles?

Is the marquee on the front or the side of the building?
