Last night, Fox aired a parody of “ESB” on “Family Guy”. It pays close hommage to the classic while parodying pop culture. The uncensored version can be rented on Bluray through Netflix.

For Dolby, did it have 5.1 EX when it came out in 1999? And for SDDS, did it have 8 channels or the 5.1?

Empire was the first movie I accidentally saw as a kid in the star wars saga. I saw the crawl and it said episode v. I then watched Episode IV, the first one, instead, liked it, then watched episode v, and really liked it. I didn’t know that Darth Vader was luke’s father. Then star wars vi i saw and thought it was allright, not as good with the ewoks in it. Then came the prequels and they sucked (except for episode iii in which we see anakin become darth vader). Out of all the star wars films, Empire is the best of them all. I first saw ESB on vhs, then in the movie theater in Wayne with the 97 re-release, and again on DVD in 2004.

any word on if this theater is going all digital soon? Garden State 16 and Jersey Gardens 20 are among the first to go all digital.

Cinema 23 didn’t show Cinerama, my mistake.

Another old 70mm theater bites the dust. Cinema 23 in Cedar Grove, which used to have one huge 70mm screen before being chopped up into 5 35mm screens at the start of the 1990’s, has closed its doors after a lease was not agreed between Clearview and the owner of the shopping center.

Good news…Seattle’s Best, a brand that’s owned by Starbucks, is coming to to this and other AMC theaters by July. What that means is that coffee lovers will drink coffee to go along with their popcorn. One reason why AMC has an advantage over smaller Clearview.

moviebuff82 commented about Cedar Grove movie theater closes after 12 years on May 17, 2010 at 3:23 pm

This isn’t the first cinema that Clearview closed down in Essex county. They also closed the Colony cinema in Livingston, as well as the Screening Zone in Montclair. The only theaters that are left are Millburn (3D), Caldwell, South Orange (3D), Bellevue (3D), and the Clairidge.

moviebuff82 commented about Cedar Grove movie theater closes after 12 years on May 17, 2010 at 3:11 pm

This cinema opened on November 23, 1969. It died May 11, 2010. For 20+ years it showed movies in 70mm before showing 35mm movies. It was retrofitted on December 23, 1977 with Dolby Stereo 70mm for a rerelease of Star Wars, which was the most popular movie of that year. Clearview bought the theater in 1998 back when Cablevision was buying the chain. With Cablevision, its Optimum Rewards program allowed moviegoers to see a movie for free on Tuesday nights. The last day that this happened was the day before the theater closed down on May 12.

Same for the clairidge, even though it still shows great indie films but has crappy projection and sound. The allwood should be closed too because it doesn’t have the 3D of say clifton commons. The Wayne quad and Kinnelon theaters are ok because they have 3d, and so is Morristown except Madison and Chester, both of which don’t have 3D.

moviebuff82 commented about Franklin Theatre on May 17, 2010 at 2:35 pm

I think this theater didn’t have that kind of projection as the closest theater in that area were Cinema 23 (now closed as of last week), the Bellevue, Clairidge (now cut down to a six-plex showing indie films), and the original Essex Green triplex.

Losing the lease was a big deal. This theater was one of the first in NJ to show 70mm films like Star Wars before getting cut into 5 screens. Yet another former 70mm cinema bites the dust.

My stepbrother’s girlfriend is a fan of the theater’s Facebook page (they also have a twitter account). She and him live in Asbury Park and they go to that theater. Sure, it can’t play commercial fare but it shows mostly indie films, which is a good thing since most of the hot movies that play in the garden state is crap.

moviebuff82 commented about Thirty-five years ago, when the fin broke through the water... on May 16, 2010 at 3:00 pm

I remember this movie. The film finally came out on DVD in 2000 for the film’s 25th anniversary with a remixed 5.1 DTS track (I have that on a burnt dvd) as well as a mono track, along with a shortened version of the making of Jaws that was on the laserdisc deluxe edition a back in the mid 90’s. Jaws was the first movie to come out on what was then MCA’s Discovision label. The DVD would be reissued again in 2005, this time with the doc intact and a remastered transfer. I hope Universal comes out with the Bluray version of the movie with plenty of extras just in time for the anniversary, but that won’t come out until 2011.

moviebuff82 commented about AMC Rockaway Inner 6/Outer 6 on May 16, 2010 at 2:55 pm

It’s a shame that AMC never installed DTS at this theater (and its successor) because DTS sounds better and is more CD-quality like than Dolby and SDDS. In the late 90’s, did AMC install Dolby EX for Star Wars Phantom Menace?

Looks like “Shrek 4” will be playing on those two RealD 3D screens this coming weekend, so I might have to check Iron Man 2 in digital for the last time this week before Friday rather than liemax. Same for Shrek 4 because I’ve seen all three Shrek movies in theaters. Has attendance declined at the imax since bad word of mouth spread about the size of the theater and the rip-off price compared to a real imax theater? I can’t wait to go to the Movie Experience’s real IMAX theater at the Meadowlands shopping area (FKA Xanadu), slated to open in 2011, which would be the closest real IMAX theater.

I remember seeing Godzilla over in Wayne (before AMC took over), and there was a crowd. It was playing on a lot of screens, but that number trickled down. I thought it was a decent remake. When AMC installed SDDS at this theater as part of a deal with Sony to install that system in all of its theatres, was it the 5.1 version or the 7.1?

Just checked the amc rockaway ticket pricing…it’s up by $.50!!! Now AMC is more expensive than Clearview….although they have the AMCinema program.
