Bruce 1 C Connoly There is a subway stop not too far from the Kings.Sorry, but I do not know what train it is. If parking is an issue,I am sure the sears and the Ratner parkimg lots will suffice. When I went to the Kings before I had a car or even a drivers license, it was adout a 30 to 40 minute bus ride.I never let that stop me from going!The destination was its own reward.

Gustavelifting…. The PATH subway stops right across the street from the Jersey. I think you have to take it somewhere in Manhattan. You can call the “311” info nomber to check it/ I drive thru Staten Island and take the Bayonne Bridge to JKennedy Blvd. to get there.With no traffic, I can make it in 40 minutes.
Brooklyn Rob… The Coliseum had mostly English speaking fare, but on occassion they would have a Spanish language film according to a Hispanic friend of mine who lived in the neighborhood. The Terminal, at Dean St. and 4th Av. showed Spanish films near the end of their run- late 60s early to mid 70s. Dont remember a movie house at 4th.Av. and 29th.St. but at 4 th. Av and 16th.St. there is a Strauss auto shop in a building that looks like it was a movie house at one time.The classic theater shape is undeniable. At one time Brooklyn had over 200 movie theaters, but now we are down to a mere 12.
Triple 8 Larry…Thanks to CINEMA TREASURES the old and forgotten theaters of Bensonhurst and Boro Park are well documented. A friend of mine who calls himself PhilPhil has posted entries on the Colony, Merro, Senate, Endicott and Ritz(QV).I post his entries under my screen name(Theaterat) because he does not have a computer. Can we press you for an anectdote describing the Hollywood? He was only there once or twice and his memory of it is very hazy.I myself live fairly close to it and always remembered it as a catering hall called the Hollywood Terrace. 2 years ago, it became a Kosher catering hall called Atares Shlomo. It is amazing that this theater does not have its own entry in “search theaters”. I found it in the entry for the Sunset.I used to go shopping in this area with my parents way back when, and it was a great place to go on a Friday or Saturday night. I remember a Woolworth, Davega appliances and a great toy store. We also used to go to the Times Square Store(TSS) on 4th av. and 61st, and the Robert Hall clothes shop across the street on 62th. st.
Vito….Was in Staten Island not too long ago. The theater I was refering to was in fact the ST. George, not the Paramount. Anyway it was open and they were getting ready for a recital or something. I asked the person at the door if I could go in and look around. They said “Sure, enjoy yourself”. The theater was very impressive, and it seemed to be in good condition. It reminded me of a theater I was in in Chicago some years back( sorry, I forgot the name).Another perfect example of a “saved” theater, Staten Island is a better place due to it. This is a perfect example on how the great Loews Kings can be re developed!

This theater was bare bones and did not even have a domed celing, let alone a balcony. There was no seperate entrance from the lobby to the orchestra. I remember 3 blocks of seats seperated by 2 aisles. The seats were very hard and not too comfortable.This theater had a small screen and the last run fare they showed always seemed to end up off the screen,never giving the moviegoer a clear view.The inside was painted a dark brown color. It was not too clean.I never liked to go there. It closed in the early 50s, a victim of TV. This theater( along with the lowly Metro on 20th.av and 64th. st) was called “the Dump”. It was owned by Interboro and it was called the “Vanity”.This may be the lost theater I vaugely remember from the early 60s.According to the entry, this theater had no air conditioning. Must have been like an inferno on a hot day.They probably charged a little less than average to get in.

Bruce1, Jim Rankin,… Since there is nothing yet, landmarking seems like at least one option to save this theater. Having it being used as an arts center, that is having community theater, lectures, concerts, revivals of classic films and the like are ideas that must be considered. These need to be discussed at a meeting. I have mentioned the Loewa Jersey as a reference point. This “wonder theater” was saved by community action and preservationists. I have written to the president of the Jersey explaining to her that a similiar effort may begin in Brooklyn, but I got no response.There may be interest on the part of community and local civic groups to back us, but, again a meeting must be held so a “battle plan” of some sort can be formed. I guess that if enough people..myself included can write to the presidents or other officers of “saved” theaters prehaps they can be of some assistance. Even if a big money man like Donald Trump does want to get involved-this seems highly unlikely- there is always the matter of ego.I realize that the situations and other considerations that saved classic theaters in other parts of the country are different from those in NY, but finding the proper channels and getting some form of organization are what WILL save the Kings.As I have said before, it is a shame that Brooklyn- the 4th largest city in America has less than 13 operating theaters.PS Bruce 1… My original handle was to be “THeaterati” but I messed it up and it came out as “Theaterat” I like the sound of it!
Looks like this structure is going to be demolished. The side wall(that faces 4th Av) has a huge chunk of bricks missing. You can see inside the 2nd. floor balcony? level, but none of the theater seems to remain.

The Atrium is one of the better “plex. The theaters are somewhat larger than average, and (surprise) it is also fairly clean.There is no sticky stuff on the floor, and the staff is friendly and cheerful. It is not the ST. George paramount, but it is a decent plsce to catch a movie if you are in Staten Island.
Bill Huelbig….That is EXACTLY the way I felt when I went to the Jersey on 3 5 05 for my first time to see Ben Hur!It was unbelievable, especially the movie fans I spoke with for the first time. Seems like I knew them for years. I almost had to ask somebody to pinch me to prove it was not a dream!

The LPC law requires that “A potential landmark must be at least 30 years old and must posess a special character or special historical, aesthetic interest or value as part of the development, heritage. or cultural characteristic of the city, state or nation”. Intend to go to the Brooklyn branch within a week.
Irv… The Stanley Does give tours, but I have never taken one. Just check it on “search Theaters” for more info. I am looking to take one in the near future. Prehaps I can combine it with a trip to the Jersey on the same day.Have fun!
