peter K’s picture <http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?31151>
permits an interesting aside comment. It shows a vintage Myrtle Avenue Trolley running between Richmond Hill to Ridgewood (placard). Interesting because there is always a lot of discussion whether certain theaters are in Queens or Brooklyn.

Yeah, yeah, I know guys. A blond moment.

Warren’s posts are always /right-on". I never went to the Ace as far as I can remember, despite living three blocks from it after moving to Ozone Park from Glendale in 1957.My recollection was that it was closed even then. The Ozone Park Italian Club was on the same block,

My recollection of premiere movie houses in descending order were:
Radio City Music Hall; once every few years for the Christmas show

RKO Madison and Keiths; a real extravagance

Ridgewood; impress a date

Glenwood, Oasis, Lefferts, Crossbay; family night once or twice a month

Belvedere, Haven, Roosevelt; nest step is the itch

Casino, Acme; the itch

The map currently shown is correct. I used to go with a gal by the name of Alice Moran who lived on 88th St south of Jamaica ave.

Thanks to Monica for the picture of the Ridgewood and to Warren for updating us on the history of the size of the marquee.

Does anyone remember Cappy’s pool hall on the 2nd or 3rd floor next door?

I am glad to see there is a rebirth in interest of this site. I’ve looked forward to seeing the multipl comments made daily for the last week or so.

The Glendale kid who worked at Ripleys Men’s Clothing store, down the street from the Madison through HS and college. They subsequently brought out Howard’s mens store which was down the block from the Ridgwewood.

The Bickford’s automat a few doors down and the original Greek ‘chee burger-cheeburger’ guys in the opposite direction.

I’ve got to re-read the posts on on all my faves. There’s a whole lot of history there.

Ciao and excelsior,

The Acme was small, no balcony or loge. They called it the itch. I walked there from my house in Glendale. I spent almost every day there for a couple of summers. It was my mother’s favorite baby sitter. Movies were safe for young kids to go to in those days. I think admission was maybe a nickel. You could go in when it opened, around noon I think, and stay through a couple of showings of second or third run movies, the old time news ‘photoreview’, and of course some cartoons. Seems to me the show changed two or three times a week. A few days a week, my mother would give me a few more cents so I could go to the Belvedere and see a different movie.

By the way, the Belvedere was the movie I always think of as being closer to a trestle rather than the Glenwwod. The Belvedere was a cut above the Acme. I thought it had a balcony, but I could be wrong.

I would have thought it more likely that the Crossbay would have closed way before the Lefferts. The Lefferts ws 3 blocks from my grandfathers house 0n 120th St off Jerome (101) Avenue.

The Lefferts and Crossbay were alternate family theatres my parents took us to bedides the Oasis and Glenwood.

Not too surprising that both etheatres neat a rehab. I am surprised that the Crossbay has been able to hang in there at all.

Robert R, Thanks for reminding me of the Oasis. I grew up in Glendale, and went to the Acme or Belvedere almost every day for a few summers. My parents took us to the Glenwood or Oasis once every few months. One of the few lixuries my dad allowed himself was a couple of bags of peanuts and chocolates which he brought at the drugstore down the street from each movie house.
