More than a century later, this property has returned to musical use. The Christian Science Sunday School building, built on the site of the former Chickering Hall / St. James / Uptown, last year became the new home of the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras.

How did they turn it into a twin in just six weeks?

When did they operate the Drexel?

Do you know if there are any plans to reopen, reuse, or do interior demolition of this theatre? It’s so strange that it is still sitting there unused and abandoned in the heart of downtown Boston.

Will you hold this event at the Brattle?

Regal Fenway closed as of today, according to Regal’s website (as well as someone who got an email canceling his tickets for today)

At the same time that this may be closing, Alamo Drafthouse plans to reopen the Icon Showplace cinema in the Seaport, and AMC plans to reopen the Arclight cinema at North Station.

The entire Eastland Mall closed permanently at the end of December, 2022.

AMC is reopening it. Will they ruin it? I hope not.

And now Landmark’s replacement Embassy Cinema has closed as well. Its last day was Labor Day, September 5, 2022.

Ron Newman commented about Huntington Theatre on Apr 17, 2022 at 3:23 am

The Boston Globe reports that the theatre will reopen this fall, a year earlier than originally scheduled. The name has been shortened to Huntington Theatre (no ‘Avenue’ anymore).

Neponset is the name of the river. It is a Native American name.

Have the condos (or anything else) been built on this site yet?

My recollection is that the Towne name did not last very long before going back to being the Southern.

Ron Newman commented about Somerville Theatre on Sep 20, 2021 at 11:38 am

The Somerville Theatre reopened on Friday, September 17 after 18 months of dormancy. The three opening films are “Last Night in Rozzie” (a local independent film), “Cry Macho”, and “Pig”.

The Crystal Ballroom, which replaces the former upstairs cinemas 4 and 5, will open on Friday, October 8.

The status of this theatre should be changed back to “Open”.

This theatre has not yet reopened after restrictions ended, because they have taken advantage of the pandemic closure to do major renovations. They are removing the upper two small cinemas and replacing them with a ballroom (returning the building to something like its original 1914 state). The theatre should reopen in mid to late summer.

National Amusements will close this theatre and sell it to a developer who plans to replace it with an Amazon distribution warehouse.

The building contains state offices, but I don’t think the state owns it.

Ron Newman commented about James M. Nederlander Theatre on Jan 8, 2019 at 2:34 am

Nederlander has every right to name the theatre after himself, but I don’t see what was inherently wrong with Oriental. There are well-known Chinese and Egyptian theatres in Hollywood.

Is it still standing empty today, or has it been demolished?

Ron Newman commented about Coolidge Corner Theatre on Jul 25, 2018 at 2:14 pm

Along with the Capitol Theatre in Arlington, the Somerville Theatre, the Lexington Venue, and the IMAX screens at the Aquarium and Jordan’s Furniture, this is one of the very few theatres that continue to advertise in the Boston Globe Movie Directory.
