there was a row of houses down left side back in the 70’s .That might be the Theater Road another poster mentioned Had friends that lived there in 71. we would turn up speakers in front row then set outside and watch the movies. actually paid and went and saw Midnight Cowboy there
Yes Willburg145 many years now …sad….whole area was my stomping grounds in the 70’s I worked the adult ‘movie’ peepshow on corner of Washington and essex then.Combat zone was so much fun back then
Direspaul…. the cinerama theater was twinned and was showing kung fu/chinese films when I lived there in 74. I think I have seen pics of the balconey cemented over? not sure. It would be so cool to see some pics inside now if it is still there as you say!
If I remember correctly this twin cinema the theaters were next door to each other no balcony etc. Saw few gay films in 70’s and rememebr seeing texas chain saw massacre there. Laughed all way out and ticket seller told me it was a true story….
the State II was a separate “theater” that was inside a store basically. Only to further the porn flix being shown in other theaters. It also didn’t have the ‘action’ that went on in the original State next door up in the balcony for sure :)
hey Dick I remember the stuart theater very well!! cheap dbl features (50 cents!) and all the sex ya wanted if sat on the left hand side lol but yes the projection was terrible and anytime new people walked in you had a bright spot on the screen! Still would not have traded that time for anything!!
Hey CharlesBoston I enjoyed your wonderful post on the old Gary Theater. I lived right next door on the top floor in 74-75 and saw many films there most notably Earthquake in its second run and yes plaster DID fall lol. I wish had more photos from all of the old theaters

sat right at that first seat on the left for the poseidon adventure on a rerelease in 75 I think. loved looking up at that big screen
why was the marquee removed?
this is so sad and understand that it is still intact??? Imagine how this could be restored?? would love to tour this now!!

it became the police station and now is a new entertainment center

top floor apartment!! 1974!! loved that place….had 50 cent pass to all the sack theaters.
I remember that entrance in 74 walked thru and posters hung of coming attractions etc.
as long as they don’t call it the Kartrashihoes Opera house!!! :)

spent many weekends there!!! remember seeing The Birds,Endless summer,Dr Zhivago,Sleeping Beauty, Mash many many more!!
