I worked in the Fortway theater back in the mid 90’s. The Alpine was our sister theater with Cineplex Odeon. Maybe I’m bias but I liked the Fortway so much better. To me the Alpine had no charter. Granted I never saw it as a single, in it’s original form.
Are you sure that shot is of the Fortway on Fort Hamilton Pkwy in Bklyn? There are some interior shots of The Fortway on its page on this site. The photos look much different
I’ve never seen an interior shot of the Alpine when it was one screen. This site has a lot of great pics of theaters before they were multiplexed. I’d love to see an interior shot of the Alpine prior to the gut job.
I am blown away by this picture. I remember the White Castle not Circa 1964 but I remember it right before it closed. The lot no longer exist. there’s now a building with a Pizzeria Uno in the basement
When I worked at the Fortway the Alpine was our “sister” theater. It’s pretty cool that the place is still opened. However I’m still a little bitter that the Fortway closed. In my opinion it was the much nicer theater. Also I’m not sure how continual the operation of the Alpine has been. When Cineplex Odeon took over from Golden there was a renovation. Was the Alpine opened during that renovation?
I see the post about the United Skates logo. Does anybody know when this United Skates location closed? One of my earliest memories is seeing that logo on the building on the southwest corner of Ft. Hamilton Pkwy & 60th St. I believe that that location closed in the early 1980’s
EJC513…..It’s late August and this is the first time that I’m seeing your post. I hope that the project went well and I hope that it’s still being displayed. I worked at the Fortway for a few years and I had a blast.
Wow. I worked in The Fortway for a few years. It had five screens by the time I worked there. I’ve always wanted to see a picture like this! Where did you find this picture? If I’m correct the center seats would become theatre#1 with the seats to left and the right becoming Theatre#4 & #5. However it first went to 3 screens before 5
This site never disappoints me. I’ve passed this building a few times and each time I’ve thought this looks like it was a Theatre. Sure enough I check this site and there it is.
The Kings is about a 7 block walk from the Beverly Road Q train station. Give or take a block. I also believe that the B41 Bus will get you there. There are Mass Transit options.
As of January 2012 the exterior of the building looks much different than the photo at the top of this page. The Key Food pictured above has had a complete exterior renovation.I’m pretty sure the inside has been renovated as well.
I’ve taken a second look at the photo at the top of this page. That’s a real deal cobblestone street. I like the photo that much more now. You can still find some of that classic cobblestone on First Avenue and a few other streets in Sunset Park.
The Fourth Avenue Police Station was located on the southwest corner of 4th Av and 43rd St. Unlike many classic Bklyn theaters the old precinct still stands today complete with horse stable. Although the building has remained vacant and crumbling for many years.
Great photo of this theater. A block away and across the street was Lento’s. Taking in a show at the Bay Ridge theater then getting a pizza at Lento’s must have been a good night.
The old building looked tiny. The theater couldn’t have seated very many people. From the history given up top it doesn’t seem that this place had much of a run.
I’ve always come back to this page looking for an actual photo of this theater. Finally got to see one.
I went to see Batman at The Fortway in the summer of ‘89.The place had just undergone a renovation. I was young but I remember it well.

20 years ago….I was working there. The A/C constantly broke down. Even those “bad” memories are actually good memories. I really miss that place.
When did it close as a theater?
I heard about this theater from my Mom and Dad. My father grew up in the Red Hook projects in the 50’s. Does anyone know what year it closed?

GoBoy, Movieplace-Thanks for the info on the separate entrance. It’s a shame that almost all of these classic theaters are gone from Bklyn.
WOW. Unbelievable photo!!
Nice photo!! Do you have any more classic shots of Bay Ridge/Dyker Heights theaters?
Great photo. I love how the Municipal Archives have it mislabeled as Fort Hamilton Avenue. The building is on Ft. Hamilton Pkwy.

I can remember passing the closed Oriental on the way to class. It was about this time that I realized that nothing last forever.
