Marked this one as “Permanently Closed.” Retro Fitness is moving in there and has signs up (if it hasn’t opened yet). Sad to see this place go - I remember seeing “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” here opening weekend and the lines stretched all the way down the strip mall. Later had a lot of great movie nights with my own kids. The prices were great, and the staff was wonderful and friendly. It’ll be missed.

ridethetrain owners the same as South Bay? It’s doomed. South Bay has been “under renovation” since 2017.

In May 2022 the owner said he would reopen. This has not yet happened.

Finally closed . I cannot believe it lasted for this long! It proves one thing : Location , Location , Location. I guess Locals that did not want to drive to Huntington Village for a movie? I also think the Commack MultiPlex closing - gave Elwood another decade or so , of life. And as I can see; they played up that “kiddie party” thing too.

I’m sure the handwriting was on the wall for the Elwood anyway when the nearby Huntington Plaza opened.

Theater is now permanently closed as of 10/20 per Newsday. The owner could not renew the lease of this theater. Another casualty of this pandemic.

We had my son’s fifth birthday there and it was a blast. The staff was phenomenal and even the party run a little longer than it should have. It’s also the only theater that I know of that charges under $10 for first-run fare. Great, great theater.

I’ve seen a bunch of you responding to “moviegoer”’s comment from 12/19/06. I’m moviegoer and this is my first post on this theater. The 12/19/06 post that you guys have responded to seems to be attributed to someone called “stlogije.” Enough people have responded to “moviegoer” that I must assume that post was previously erroneously attributed to me due to some Cinema Treasures technical glitch.

The only difference in the appearance of the facade as a single screen, twin or quad are the designation “twin” or “quad” and the style of lettering is still the same. I would venture that the word “elwood” is the original and the adds on were made to match.

I honestly don’t think it looked that much different; it’s pretty generic ? (dsslave- are you friends with me on Facebook , and how are you doing?)

I went to a party there yesterday for a six year old to see Madagascar 2. My kids range in age from 3 to 8, and they all had a great time, as did the birthday boy.

The theater is a quad, it reminded me of the theaters I’d go to as a kid in the days before the Multiplex. I loved the fact that the theater was exclusively for the party. All of the kids had a fantastic time, as their parents. I picked up a flier on my way out, and I think the party was very well priced for what you receive. I’ll be bringing my three back to see Bolt next weekend, even though the theater is a bit far for us. It’s much more family-friendly than the multiplex, and we really had a great time!

Regardless, I agree with CPA Eric. The Elwood is our first choice when going to the movies.

Re: Moviegoer on Dec 19, 2006:

I have been to several birthday parties here with my daughter. The staff does a very nice job making sure all the kids have a good time. If you are interested in a movie party, you should definitely consider Elwood Cinema.

BTW – This is easily the nicest theatre in the area. It should definitely be your first choice for any trip to the movies.

The above poster w/ Pink Panther comment: Yes, it was odd. in the 1970’s (U.A.?) Theaters showed Pink Panther cartoons before any feature. I saw one before the 1978 version of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” at the Smithhaven Mall movie theatre. In hindsight, I’d rather see that than a Cingular or Coke commercial like they show today.

Why would anyone book a kids birthday party at a movie theater? How is that “fun” or “special” ? Weird.
