This is actually the second time Cardinale has stepped up to revive the theatre. The first time was quite awhile back. The Newsday article describing it was titled, I think, “The awakening of the Mattituck Theatre”. I believe he put $125,000 into it at that time.
Have to eyeball it one day. The auditorium on the left was space later acquired and added to the original footprint.
The films mentioned in the article were playing at Greenport the previous week. Has to see how this plays out.
Pleaase update, based on new and old photos the 3 screens that were down the hallway on the right is probadly retail space and one theatre on the left was closed off. Movie Buffs Rejoice: Mattituck Cinemas reopens with a new look and first-run movies
In a pleasant Tuesday night surprise this week, Mattituck Cinemas reopened its doors in Mattituck Plaza — and not a blockbuster too soon.
With three screens all showing first-run films, a slick new art-deco look and a concession stand that, in addition to all your movie-house faves, includes a special Lucharitos section (with margaritas, too!), Mattituck Cinemas’ new incarnation is returning to its roots.
After its unannounced Tuesday night soft opening, James McKinnon, representative for the Cardinale family, talked about the “labor of love” that went into the relaunch.
“We’d been talking about it for a while. A lot of people would say, ‘oh, we miss the movie theater!’ But we weren’t sure. The movie theater industry is not what it once was,” McKinnon says. “Ultimately, my father-in-law [Alan Cardinale of Cardinale Management, which owns the shopping plaza] decided, let’s give it a shot. It was really him who was willing to take the risk.”
Work has been ongoing to relaunch in earnest for nearly a year, according to McKinnon, re-envisioning Mattituck Cinemas with little luxuries to tempt film lovers from their couches. The theater has been outfitted with all-new, larger screens, state of the art sound systems and projection equipment, and comfortable reclining seats. “The response was amazing,” McKinnon says of the Tuesday night soft opening. “When people walk in and see what it looks like now, they’re pleasantly surprised.”
The theater first opened in November 1973 and for many years was the sole year-round movie house on the North Fork. While McKinnon acknowledges that the movie theater industry has changed immensely since then, especially in the wake of Covid, he and his family felt that a cinema was important to the North Fork.
“It’s really a labor of love and wanting to do something good for the community,” says McKinnon, who was happily surprised by the positive community response as word quickly spread. “Marc [LaMaina, owner of Lucharitos] did a little blurb on Facebook about us opening, and I was shocked at the response from one little post! It was a nice feeling … the Cardinale family appreciates the support and we hope the community turns out for it.”
This weekend, Mattituck Cinemas is screening “Conclave,” “Wild Robot” and “Venom.” McKinnon is planning a grand opening which just so happens to coincide with some huge new releases: “Wicked,” “Gladiator II” and “Moana 2.” Visit Mattituck Cinemas on Facebook for updates and call 631-298-7469 for the latest showings.
The opening ad does not specifically state Mattituck 3 so, perhaps, additional screens will open down the road. Next time I’m out that way I’ll try and eyeball the situation.

ridethetrain does this mean they have relinquished the space acquired later in it’s operation when they expanded? Did they combine a couple of the auditoriums for a totally new configuration?
Interesting to see how this plays out now that three of the screens at Greenport are also open and showing at least one of the same films.
Surprising that they hadn’t put a teaser on the pylon prior to the “soft” opening.

Must have just reopened. Drove past last Thursday and there was nothing on the pylon.
Please update, theatre now open according to the facebook page. Currently show, The Wild Robot, Concieve and Venom. Just reopned under new management. Curently in soft opening according to their facebook page.
This should be listed as closed. From the advertising on the pylon it would seem that, except for wrestling, there is nothing of an entertainment, much less movie experience, available. Should just be a matter of time before they remove the sign “Cinemas” at the entrance.
Took a peek in the closed building. Refreshment stand is gone. There are now clusters of tables. With all the things they are advertising that will be part of the future it remains to be seen whether movies will ever be shown.
Marquee now advertises a new arcade open and a new eatery. Previously it featured axe throwing. The recorded phone message is circa July announcing Sunday classic films. Will be out that way in October and actually park and take a look see.
RobertR- Attendance is way off. Apparently the conditions to the movie rental agreements are extremely costly.
What competition is causing this theater to not be profitable with first run movies? It looks like its very well maintained and should do business.

Phone message indicates classic films are being shown Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Was not impressed by the selection.

According to the pylon, the main attraction is the Axe Throwing Lounge. Sad.
It’s just been announced the Mattituck will no longer screen first run films. Because of declines in attendance and the the terms of rental of a first run film they are often not profitable. Theatre One will become a revival house. The other theatres are being retrofitted for other uses.
I would think under the circumstances they will relinquish some of the space which will return to retail. You may recall the last screens were added using adjacent retail space.
PLEASE UPDATE, theatre became a triplex on January 7, 1983, Fiveplex on June 7, 1985, sixplex on December 5, 1986 and the current 8 on June 24, 1988
Cineplex Odeon took over this theatre on August 12, 1989 and ran it until Loews Cineplex merger. After the merger in late 1999 went back independent.
Opened on November 14th, 1973 as a twin cinema. No grand opening ad found, just regular listings in Newsday.
