This venue’s 70mm presentations history is included in the recently-updated article “70mm Presentations in Miami: A Chronology of 70mm Large Format Exhibition, 1956-Present”.
The appendix to a City of Miami Beach historic site designation report for the Hotel Mayflower has a list of other projects designed by the Mayflower’s architect, Martin Luther Hampton, and one of them is the Sheridan Theatre.
No interior photos of this great Miami House? I’d love to know what it was like.
Would have liked very much to have seen its Cinerama screen.
Here’s a new 4-page 50th anniversary FIDDLER ON THE ROOF retrospective featuring a roadshow playdate chronology and historian Q&A. The Sheridan’s lengthy run is mentioned in the piece.
The theater was demolished sometime in the early 1980’s after remaining dormant for about 7 years. The structure that replaced it became the Centrust building and later the Sheridan Center and what it remains today. The site has never been retail oriented since - or before - the theaters demolition. Only financial and medical services
Closed Sunday September 17th, 1972. Reopened briefly in 1973 to screen the infamous “Deep Throat” and then was subsequently shuttered again after running afoul of local ordinances in February 1973.
The Sheridan theatre opened on January 15th, 1937. Grand opening ad posted.

patryan6019… Was there a run of “Circus World” in Cuyahoga Falls that interrupted “Mary Poppins”? No, the Cuyahoga Falls/Akron entry on my “Circus World” Cinerama list is an error.
What does a not quite complete list of “Circus World” engagements have to do with the Uptown specifically? It’s related, in my opinion, since the Uptown was one of the venues in which it played, and I thought that by posting the (mostly) full list provided a more informative answer for the guy who had asked the question. (Though I wasn’t prepared for the guy’s obsession with dwelling on how short the Uptown’s run was!)

dmtyler, Al is absolutely correct. The Roosevelt did not start venturing into blue movie fare – at least on a full time basis – until the late 1970s. (Further visual evidence below) The Sheridan remained shuttered after “Throat” for a good 7 or 8 years and was the victim of some fires as well. Around the early 80s, the structure was gutted and Centrust made this a large branch office.

Coate…It doesn’t, other than to make you aware of perhaps inaccurate information you have posted that needs addressing. Besides, what does a not quite complete list of Circus World engagements have to do with the Uptown specifically. I apologize to the Sheridan page for being off topic, though there’s been no activity on it for more than a year. Over the last 10 years how many inaccuracies on CT have you made others aware of. So just between us (because, most likely, no one else cares or even knows)— was there a run of CW in Cuyahoga Falls-Akron that interrupted Mary Poppins?

Coate…Perhaps you haven’t checked the Uptown {DC} page lately, but you may have provided your own erroneous internet claim.
Seventy-five years ago today the Sheridan premiered “Gone With the Wind.” (The Sheridan was the only theater where the film opened on that date despite erroneous Internet claims of a nationwide release commencing on that date.)
Posted a picture of my father doing the opening of Around the world in 80 days ( boy the movie titles were long back then) with the searchlights for the opening at the Sheridan. 1956.
In the anticipation leading up to Criterion’s release of a certain epic comedy, I’d like to commemorate that film’s roadshow presentation at the Sheridan, which I have always held wonderful memories of seeing at the tender age of 14. I especially cherish my having recalled a couple of the soon-to-be-cut scenes that indicate we were there within the first few weeks of the run.

Saw “Battle of the Bulge” Cinerama, in 1966.
I saw “How The West Was Won” in Cinerama (three projectors) at this theatre. I might have also seen “Hawaii” there. And possibly “The Greatest Story Ever Told” which I recall because the seats were sold individually, like in a live Broadway theatre. So everyone was walking around looking for this seat or block of seats, even when they came in late. Ushers with flashlights and everything.
That would be Mini Art Cinema at Sheridan Avenue and 41 Street, on Tropic of Cancer, but it wasn’t advertised as the Sheridan Theatre as the Song of Norway notice was on the prior page.

Also, at the link you provided, @AlAlvarez, the January 1, 1971, Miami News shows that Tropic of Cancer starring Rip Torn (X Rated) was playing at the Sheridan Theatre.
dmtyler, I doubt “DEEP THROAT” ever played at the Roosevelt since it was banned in Miami Beach after the Sheridan premiere.

“TORA! TORA! TORA” had a very long Roadshow run at the Beach and not at the Sheridan which was indeed showing “SONG OF NORWAY” at the time.

I may be wrong, however, I remember Deep Throat being on the Roosevelt’s marquee. I went to school across the street. I defer to others' more able memory (or possible first hand knowledge) on this point.
I remember Fiddler on the Roof, Song of Norway and Tora Tora Tora being played at the Sheridan for the longest time in the early seventies.
Every Saturday night, when I was about 12 or 13 in 1977 and 1978 I would help a black kid, who had a year or two on me, sell newspapers from under the Sheridan marquee. He was saving up to buy a motorcycle. The theater had been closed for a few years by then. A non-movie event may have been held in the theater, possibly a sales presentation, prior to its destruction.

Hi Al. I am sure Deep Throat was NOT played at the Sheridan Theater but at the Roosevelt Theater about 4 blocks west on Arthur Godfrey Road (41st Street).
I don’t remember any Rated X movies being played at the Sheridan but at the Roosevelt.
I remember that Tora Tora Tora had a long run at the Sheridan as well.
The January 5th, 1937 grand opening ad has been uploaded in the photo section for this theatre.
