The “Winnie The Pooh” film the Fox Theatre showed on opening day is called “Winnie The Pooh And The Honey Tree”.

Please update, closed as a twin on September 9, 1988 under Cineplex Odeon, they were originally supposed to due the renovation, but due to chapter 11 they never did the work. It open under UA on June 30, 1993. Other previous owners, NGC, Mann, Cinema 5, RKO Century and Cineplex Odeon.

The entire Hylan Plaza shopping center was torn down in 2017 and is being replaced with a modern shopping center called ‘The Boulevard’ which will include an Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.

The theatre at Hylan and Ebbitts was actually the Rae Twin.
I was a projectionist at the Hylan Plaza from its opening under the UA banner in 93 through January of 96. I’m sorry to say that this location has just closed.

With the release of the latest Star Wars Movie episode VII I was inspired to search for the movie theatre where I saw the original movie back when I was a kid. I remember seeing Star Wars at this theatre for the first time when I was 5 ½ years old back in May of 1977 when it was known as the Fox Theatre. My older sister as myself loved this movie and she took me every week during the weekends while it played there throughout the rest of 1977. I do not know how long the Star Wars run lasted at the Fox, but If I were to guess it was 6+ months and I probably saw the movie 30+ times back then. Walking with my sister to go see Star Wars from where I use to live on Hett Avenue were very happy days and for me and a defining moment in my child hood memories.

Thanks Mattglynn for responding to my post about the King Kong 1976 movie showing at The Lane in New Dorp. Yes, I do remember now because I saw it in early January of 1977, and in the lobby they had a poster that said King Kong for Christmas and he was holding a candy cane in one hand and they put a Christmas hat on him. It was really funny and when you are a kid you remember the silliest details about your first horror film. I am pretty sure that the Mary Poppins film was shown at the UA Cinema in the mid 70’s but still can’t confirm…if anyone remembers would appreciate any info you may have. Thanks again. :)
I was here yesterday to see “Iron Man 3”.All 5 theatres have brand new seats and the sight line is much better. A matinee was $6. Still, there were only 2 other patrons in my theatre, and 2 of the others were empty.

jimmyhank, I think King Kong was at the Lane on New Dorp. I remember going to see that when i was like 5 or 6 too. Halloween II opening night Fri. Oct 30, 1981. Rambo. Those are the movies that stick out for me at the Lane. Last movie i saw there was Rocky IV.
I was here last weekend and it has been cleaned up. It also now has bargain ticket prices – only $5.50 on a Saturday matinee. They were not stingy with the A/C like they once were. One complaint – some seats are worn out and should be replaced.

That whole Pathmark/KMart shopping center is a mess. Stores are vacant for years with no explanation. Friends who patronize this theater all say that the place is in poor shape. And yet the theater stays open.
A few years ago the rumor was that the Hylan would take the large space that Toys-R-Us had vacated. But Toys-R-Us reopened their store after years of vacancy. So no one really knows whats going on with that entire shopping center property.

Does anyone know if this is the theater that showed King Kong back in 1976/1977? I went there when I was 5 years old but I can’t recall if it was in this movie house or the UA theater in Staten Island. Also does anyone remember the rerelease of Mary Poppins in the mid 1970’s? Was that in this theater or the UA? Hope someone out there remembers. thanks
This theater is probably the biggest dump of any theater currently opened on Staten Island. I went there a few times right after I moved here and wasn’t sure where the other theaters were. I saw Star Wars-The Phanton Menace, Space Cowboys and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas there. The last time I was there was a couple of years ago to see An American Carol, a film I was dying to see that wasn’t playing anywhere else. There were literally rows of seats that were roped off and broken. Terrible. They even showed just 1 trailer!! I would never go there again. As Bette Davis said in one of her films: (I think All About Eve,) “What a dump.”
