On December 20, 1941, the Palace becomes the News Palace Theatre showing newsreels. In 1952, the theatre switched to the Palace Theatre moniker with Hollywood feature films.

HI Lots of old movies, westerns, musicals. When I worked there in the early 50’s they didn’t show any kind of porn. Was the Orange Julius next door when you went? The theater owned it too. Lot of beach muscles boys got the Julius with a raw egg mixed in it.
Wow. Just…wow! That brings back a ton of memories. This is the first theater I ever went to. I remember there being a ton of different types of movies playing there. Old-school Kung Fu, science fiction, horror, and even soft-core porn! I remember being a little kid and watching “Blood On The Sun” and “Cinderella 2000” there.

I worked at the Palace from 1953 to 1955. It was a clean will managed theater. They showed the “Outlaw with Jane Russell” Other theaters thought it was to raw to show. It ran for 2 weeks and had big crowds.
A “Orange Julius” was also run by the theater. I worked there too.
Sometime ate lunch at the Panama Cafe south of the theater.
I remember this theatre. For a theatre named Palace it was a damned small theatre alright.

Tisloews,if you go to the PALACE theatre in Athens i have reprinted some old City manager letters to other managers.Found the letters in the MILLER theatre filing cabnets years ago.
Same to you Mike, Never had a Palace in Nashville that I know of. There was a Loews Palace in Memphis though. Elvis worked at the Loews State there.He got fired I have heard.

The Palace closed on 03.19.84. I had to turn off the marquee the next day with sadness. We ran a mix of films there all in triple bill format. Martial arts, horror , and once in awhile a 3-D movie which took extra work to set up. The balcony was closed the entire time I was mgr/projectionist. The site is now part of a parking structure for a hotel. I remember the 5 years or so I worked there fondly but VCR rentals pretty much spelled the end as much as redevelopment. The first sound movie shown in LB was shown there, I even met the electrician that put in the system and he was in his 80’s then. The orchestra pit was sealed off and very small and under the paint the vents for the air system were exotic hardwod. I still have some momentos of the place, the very last film shown there was “Children of the Corn”.
By 1952 it was listed as the NEWS-PALACE and was screening documentaries and newsreels.

in the early 80’s i saw house of wax and battle beyond the stars both in 3-d. the theatre had a bright light on in the middle of the theatre. i remember the balcony i was scared to go up there by myself i was 11 at the time and i went to the theatre by myself. first and only time they closed it before i had a chance to get back there.

The Pike!! Now there’s a name I haven’t heard spoken in many, many years.
I remember seeing it on Pine in Downtown L.B. driving past after spending a few hours at the Pike.
THE PALACE THEATER IN LONG BEACH WAS A THEATER I DISCOVERED AROUND 1978-79 YEAR,AND I WENT WITH MY OLDER BROTHER TO GO SEE “PHANTASM AND CHALLENGE OF DEATH”.
OVER THE YEARS THEY USE TO PLAY A LOT OF EXPLOITATION MOVIES,ESPACIALLY KUNG FU FLICKS!
WHEN THEY STARTED REBUILDING LONG BEACH,THEY TORN THIS THEATER DOWN FOR THE NEW MALL.
I never before noticed how much the terrazzo of the Palace looked like the lower part of a giant clown’s face, with the nostrils just below the box office, and then… would that be a bristly moustache, or a mouth full of teeth like giant piano keys?
Can’t sleep. Palace will eat me!
