NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A treasured Brooklyn movie theater has closed after serving the community for more than two decades.
The Regal UA Court Street theater shuttered its doors earlier this month, reportedly without warning, taking many by surprise.
Rendy Jones, a 23-year-old Crown Heights resident, described as a “movie buff” by The New York Times, told the outlet he cried when he first heard the news on Twitter that the theater had closed.
“I started going there before I could even walk, either with my mom or dad,” he said. “I still have my ticket stubs. I’m looking at them now.”
Last week, a spokesperson for Madison International Realty, the property owner, said it “shared the community’s disappointment in the sudden closing of the Regal theater. We are in the process of assessing the situation and gathering more information.”
In a statement, Regal Cinemas said that it was forced to make the decision after it failed to reach an agreement with the landlord on a new lease, “reflecting the need for a major and very costly renovation” at the 13-story megaplex.
“Unfortunately, Regal was not able to reach an agreement with the landlord on a fair and sustainable rent that would have allowed for the very significant renovation investment needed,” a company spokesperson said. “Since the term of the lease had ended and the negotiations with the landlord failed, we instead had to close the location.”

I got a 2nd hand source through an industry insider that AMC will take over the lease.
They added an Screen X screen 6 months ago and now 6 months later it closed what a waste of money.
Please update, theatre closed January 16, 2022 This is strange, Regal spends money and adding Screen X last summer and the only theatre in Brooklyn that has Dolby Atmos Also, some photos in the photos section.

Woman on the phone today said “we will be open this week” Fandango now has them listed as temporarily closed.
Could it be a temporary Covid break-out cleaning they do not want to broadcast? Restaurants and Walmart are doing that.
Now the regal app seems to be indicating that nothing is showing on Monday besides a Betty White fathom event that got cancelled. Even Fandango got rid of that singular scream showing for Thursday you were able to buy tickets to. I’m not even sure if it will be operating by Monday anymore. This is very interesting.
I just googled the address of the theater, 106 Court St, Brooklyn, NY 11201, and typed real estate. Looks like space at this address, 12 levels worth, which is what this theater has, is down as retail space available for lease. So it sounds like the theaters days are numbered. When, is anybody’s guess, but it looks like it’s been available for 7 months now. Who knows if the fate of the Barnes n Noble is numbered too. They are located next door in the same building.
As of Saturday January 15th 2021, theater is open and operating as normal. Posters inside we’re changed and feature NEW upcoming movies. Sunday has a very light schedule where most movies only have two early showtimes. Other new movies like Belle and Scream 5 have showings up till 8pm. Update: Showtimes for Monday thru Thursday January 20th have been added and are active for purchase. But only Belle and Scream 5 have showtimes, and all the others from the weekend are not posted. Theaters upstairs 9, 10 and 11 have screenings. It is possible that the theater will get a renovation and not close? No one at the theater is giving any good answers and seem “clueless” to any rumors. Unless they know something yet can’t say anything to the public.

Called the theater, manager had no idea why there are no showtimes, but he said he just got back from having covid. So ¯_(ツ)_/ who knows
The Fathom Events screenings of Casablanca at Court Street have been removed from the Regal website.
During the off peak movie season, theater don’t run early morning shows
It appears that a lot of theaters are dropping early afternoon matinees and later evening shows. Probably due to the difficulty with finding employees. Condensing the number of showtimes between Monday and Friday. Also the lack of major films during the winter months.
Additionally the Fandango website doesn’t even list all of the future showings past this Sunday. It just lists that Scream showing on Thursday (which was actually something else last night. It seemingly just got changed)
The regal app shows plenty of more showtimes upcoming, but all go to a “there was a problem with your order” page with the exception of on Thursday afternoon show of Scream in RPX…. Uh oh!
The lack of showtimes on Sunday, January 16th after 8pm, save for two upcoming Fathom Events screenings of Casablanca on January 23rd and 26th (for which refunds could be provided), is concerning.
The Regal website shows it as open and selling advanced tickets for several new films up to a January 26 showing of Casablanca.
Rumors are swirling around on Twitter that this theater might be closed. No confirmation yet but it was noted there’s no first run movies with showtimes up past this Friday.
Please update, theatre 4 is getting Screen X. Theatre first attraction “Black Widow” on July 9, 2021
Theater 4 is currently undergoing a renovation.
Looks like it may become a ScreenX theater.
