Theatre #17 is the Laser IMAX Theatre. Theatre #18 is Dolby Cinema Theatre
First off, I really have a soft spot for this theater given how many good memories I have from the times I’ve seen movies at the theater over the years. Plus, it was my late father’s favorite movie theater as well. And the clutching of pearls isn’t for AMC necessarily, but because I’m honestly really concerned that due to what’s going on with the pandemic, movie theaters, in general, might very well not be able to survive. And I think it would be very sad if we were living in a world without movie theaters soon. I know a lot of people like to watch movies at home these days instead of going to the theater. But, as far as I’m concerned, nothing still beats the movie going experience!
I know. AMC might file for bankruptcy for the first time in its history while still operating their theaters.
So has anyone been back to this theatre since it reopened? If so, what is the vibe like? And are they selling concessions right now? I’m just wondering since I might finally check out Tenet soon and would like to have an idea of what I can expect. Also, I do respect that AMC is at least trying to keep their theatres open right now. If they play their cards right, maybe they can gain some new patrons over the next few months, especially given what has happened with Regal theaters. And generally speaking, I just really hope that movie theaters can survive this whole mess. Because given how much going to the movies has meant to me over the years, simply put, I can not imagine a world without movie theaters heading forward. That is too depressing for me to even think about.
Please update, 3900 seats
If AMC decides to sell, someone would buy it AMC hasn’t put recliner there, it was a busy theatre
If it was a good theatre before the pandemic, it will reopen. Whether AMC operates it or not, somebody else will.
So obviously with what’s going on with the current pandemic, this AMC theater along with all the others in the US are currently closed. My question is do you think this AMC theater will open again? Because I still greatly prefer going to it over some of the other AMC locations in the area and will practically be heartbroken if it ends up closed for good, especially given how much the theater has meant to me over the years and all the memories I have from the times I’ve spent at the place.
After three-and-a-half months (73 days) of renovations, the upgraded Laser IMAX auditorium with AMC Signature Plush Rocker seating opened here on Thursday October 3rd, just in time for Joker.
Laser IMAX is confirmed to be in the works from this theater’s official website: https://www.amctheatres.com/movie-theatres/new-brunswick/amc-new-brunswick-18
With regard to NJ, Cherry Hill 24 has also been confirmed to receive IMAX with Laser and Garden State 16’s IMAX is undergoing renovations (Laser is not confirmed as of yet but it’s likely).
I’m skeptical that they’ll add recliners, however, since that would halve the number of available seats. For these kinds of upgrades, the new seating that they usually put in are called “AMC Signature Plush Rockers”
AMC New Brunswick 18’s IMAX Theatre is being renovated to recliners, and possibly Laser IMAX. So is AMC Cherry Hill 24.
The IMAX theater at this location closed today for renovations and will re-open in a couple of months. They are presumably upgrading to laser projection and long-overdue new seating.
Theater now called AMC New Brunswick 18.
Dolby cinema now open with deadpool 2.
Unfortunately, it appears the seat fabric has not been updated since the grand opening in 1996. The IMAX auditorium seats remain the same even as the carpet and arm rests were updated for reserved seating. The smaller theatres usually have moths and there have been reports of bed bugs. The theatre still shows a nice selection of movies and is $5.97 b4 noon for 2D titles. They just installed new ticket kiosks so hopefully they will update the seats and fumigate properly for insects as well.

This opened on November 27th, 1996. The grand opening ad as the largest cinema in the state can be found in the photo section for this cinema.
So happy to see this theater, not only still remain, but prosper and flourish over the last 20 years. The cynic in me always thought it might die out. I don’t go out to the movies as much, so I haven’t gotten a chance to go here very often, but good to see people enjoying it.
This multiplex has an incredible, fun-filled, faux-Hollywood decorated foyer, which is great fun!
The link posted by gabedellafave in December 2005 isn’t working, so here’s some information about the gravestone in the middle of the rear car park. This dates back to 1828. A department store was built on the site and the ground was levelled – all except for the area around the grave, which now sits about 8ft above the ground! The story is that Mary Ellis (1750–1828) was a spinster. According to local legend, she was seduced by a sea captain who vowed to return to marry her. She would come to the spot where her grave now stands, each day, to look for his ship in the Raritan River in New Brunswick, but he never returned. As gabedellafave says, how’s that for unique?!
I was the first projectionist from the union to work here sharing the booth with management. Unfortunately I ended up running the entire 2 booths most of the time.
