J miller Walker Sr. was the owner of the building. No relation to Miller theater family.
The Elite was at 216 8th St in the Miller Walker Hall. It was owned by Wella who also owned the Grand Opera and Wells (Imperial). Source: Augusta Herald ads from 1905 - 09 and Sanborn Fire Insurance Map (1904).
threw some silent screen stars on, thought it would look better than nothing..
yes, luckly a local writer had time to do the reserch like you did so many years ago on the RITZ in Tampa…had he not, i had no idea these theatres were here..
Mike, I ran into the same problem here in Tampa. I was shocked to find no movie ads were published in the Tampa Tribune at all until just prior to 1920 as I recall. That would make it next to impossible to research local theatres that ran silent films. Who knows how many of these silent theatres we really had?
It is just impossible to track down any more info, even the old local paper had no ad of what i could find. What i have above is most likely it.
Still searching, afraid some of these old theatres are just gone,Bob.
Anyone have more info or old photos?
Somewhere in that area.I haven’t been Downtown since I found this Theatre.I bet you guys had quite a few Silent Movie Houses that you probably never heard about. We have a Writer for the paper Don Rhodes and he using old papers and other historical documents found these theatres.I wrote him and told him about CT,but never heard back,For all I know he could using a name like you,so I wouldn’t know if he was on CT.
Wasnt this theatre located a bout a block from the Imperial?
