There is a Reflection Memorial Garden at the Aurora Municipal Center on the corner of East Alameda parkway and South Chambers Road to honour the victims of the Aurora century Cinema shooting, extanding the current Xeriscape garden, half a mile from the cinema. There was a impromptu memorial site in a vacant lot near the cinema, before the memorial garden.

Tim McGrath, a survivor of the shooting, has made a film based on the experience, “Surviving Theater 9”:

Is there possibly a memorial in the auditorium where the shooting happened?

5 years ago this past week during a midnight showing of TDKR everything changed. This forced exhibitors to show Thursday night advance showings at earlier times and to increase security around the theaters.

It was on this coming weekend one year ago that this theater became a disaster area.

Now that this cinema has reopened after extensive renovations, can the overview photo be changed to one of the new photos of the renovated cinema?

The official name of the theater is now simply “Century Aurora” so please make the corresponding changes. News story at http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_22368053/vacant-since-mass-shooting-renewed-aurora-theater-reopen

Tentative plans have been announced for the theater’s renovation and remodeling; the screening room where the shootings took place will become a giant screen auditorium. The theater will be rebranded as a Cinemark and there will be some exterior modifications. View article

Not only that, but moviegoers are filing a lawsuit against Front Row Joe for security issues at the theater during the shooting.

The results of the City of Aurora’s survey of what citizens would like to see done with the Century 16 show that the majority who responded want to see the theater reopened. The results have been forwarded to Cinemark. View article

I truly hope The Cinemark levels the current building and build a new complex in the memory of the people that were taken on that day, The new Auditorium 9 should be the most beautiful theater something very special tribute to the Cooper – Cine Capri – so watching a movie in that theater will be special again

It seems this house is still closed. Any word or info on reopening?

I don’t feel tearing down the theater would be the thing to do. Try to move on, but maybe put up a memorial in the lobby?

Ritchie_T’s post is right. Yes, this situation has been scary, but if you are hesitant or not sure what to do next, please go back to the movies. Don’t let the Century Aurora 16 shootings get you down.

For you who have gone back, keep the faith and keep watching!

Thanks ‘Mikeoaklandpark’. We’re hoping to be able to add additional social media features in the near future.

For now, thank you all for your thoughtful conversation about this theater and the victims.

Cinemark and the community are figuring this one out now. I think Theatre #9 should be the memorial and if they can they should separate the roof and back wall to create the memorial space, as that theater has lost the magic forever. Any time there has been a shooting death in a cinema, it’s been a one-off thing (sometimes gang related), not a massacre. There is no rulebook for this, but I don’t think leveling the complex and pretending a cinema never existed here is a way to honor the victoms either. I hope some how they can create a quiet space of reflection.

I’m not sure if Cinemark or the mall own the land, there’s always the possibility they could demolish it for a big-box store. Here’s some local coverage: http://www.9news.com/news/local/article/279470/222/Future-of-theater-shooting-site-unknown

After the San Ysidro McDonald’s 1984 massacre (21 dead, 19 injured), McDonald’s tore down the building, created a memorial to the victims, and donated the land to the city. (They later built another outlet nearby)

Cinemark should really consider following that example.

Whenever I think about those poor people excitedly settling into their seats to see this latest blockbuster, unaware of the horror to come, it almost makes me physically ill. My heart goes out to all those affected by this tragedy especially to the victims and their families.

I cannot fathom how anyone would want to see a movie here again whether it’s weeks or months from now. I too feel they should level the complex. One option would be to demolish the theatre where the incident took place and build a memorial or small park in honor of those who died here. The one drawback is that this theater is at the rear of the complex so the memorial wouldn’t be visible from the front of the building.

But I suspect Cinemark may eventually reopen this location following a complete renovation of the affected theatre and/or the entire complex.
