Atherley Cinema Southampton

This photograph of the Atherley cinema was taken in August 1960. The Atherley took its name when it was built on the edge of the then Atherley Estate, being the first purpose built cinema in Southampton. Opening prices in 1912 for the 650 seater cinema were circle 9d which could be reserved for an extra 3d back stalls 6d and front stalls 3d. From the profits made from the Atherley Mr Buck built the Broadway cinema in Portswood Southampton seating 1,500 opening 6th June 1930 which is still in use today as a church. During the Second World War in 1940 two incendiary bombs fell through the roof into the circle, however, the audience of 600 watching a film at the time were unharmed and there was no panic as they left the building, temporary repairs were made ready for opening the next day.
