Last cinema by David Nye which opened on 20th April 1940. The Strand never had a name on the front of the building and even the four apertures for the film display frames never materialized, it appears posters were just pasted onto their rendered areas. The unused garden in the forecourt did spring to life from the 1950’s and in 1953 their were red, white and blue flowers growing to compliment the flag decorated cinema façade. Audiences dwindled during the 1960’s the Strand suddenly closed on 8th November 1969 the final film was ‘Crooks Anonymous’ a 1962 film starring Leslie Phillips & Stanley Baxter. In this photo the film title remains displayed above the entrance of the derelict building, awaiting its sad fate in early 1970 when the Strand was demolished.
