Harry Sever Leon opened the Rita Theatre in the spring of 1936 on the west side of the square. Mr. Leon was the operator of a number of West Texas theatres. By February of 1945, the Rita Theatre had its seats re-arranged, its walls and lobby repainted, and the sound system changed. The Haskell Free Press in 1949 shows that L.N. Childress purchased the Rita Theatre and Texas Theatre from the Leon Interests in Haskell. The Rita Theatre was remodeled and repainted again in 1952 with a new projection and sound system installed. In June 1953, the Rita Theatre closed permanently in order for the owners to devote all of their efforts to opening the new Texas Theatre.
