Burlington Drive-In

Located on the southwest corner of Agency Road and W. Burlington Avenue, the Drive-In was Burlington’s only drive-in theater. It opened on June 7, 1949. By 1951 it had been renamed Burlington Drive-In and enjoyed continued use until 1994, when it closed in September as one of the last remaining drive-in’s in operation in the state of Iowa. The theater was demolished in 1995 to make way for commercial development of the site.

The Burlington was mentioned in a roundup of the state’s new drive-ins in the May 29, 1949 Des Moines Register. “At the new Burlington drive-in there is a miniature train, designed after the new Burlington Streamliner. It runs under the huge screen and around the premises. It will seat 25 children. Manager of the theater, which opens June 7, is J. W. Bird.”
