Just looked at the clip on youtube. Thanks velveteen71 for sharing. Brought back a lot of memories. Don’t know if you went to the Playhouse when I was managing it or not but I hope you had a good time going there.

I took a picture of the Playhouse when I was managing it. Don’t know if I still have it but will look for it and will let you know if I find it. I will also look at the clip on youtube.

I remember the “Candy Cupboard”. There was also “Licks” burger place across the street. A lot of people would go there also. That was the original location for the “Licks” franchise.

We’ve just started going here and we love it. Great selection of movies. Seating is perfect. Incredible picture and audio. Wonderful selection of food. We travel quite a ways to get there but it is worth the drive.

We go there a lot. Great selection of independent and foreign movies. Hope it continues as it would be shame for a theater of this caliber to close.

Haven’t been there for a few years. OK place. Good value for the admission. Great popcorn.

I remember going to this theater when I first moved to Hollywood in the early ‘90s. I think admission was only a couple of dollars. The owner/manager who worked the box office used to have bonsai trees in the box office. He was an older gentleman and I used to talk to him about the bonsai. Sad to see it closed.

The Soo Theater was a great little movie theater. Used to come over from the Canadian “Soo” to see movies here. Liked the little restaurant/diner next door.

Used to go to the Algoma now and then. It was regarded as the upper class cinema. Don’t know why. Maybe because the admission was higher. Growing up in the ‘50s and '60s most of us went to the Princess Theater on Gore St. and the Biltmore (later the Odeon) on Queen St. The Biltmore was located across from the Algoma and a couple of doors down from the Orpheum.
Would like to see the Princess Theater and the Biltmore/Odeon listed on this site if possible.

They used to show a lot of “B” movies and double bills. Probably the least attended movie theater in the city. My parents were there the night the ceiling started caving in. The theater was demolished shortly thereafter.

This was an Odeon theater in the 1960s and into the mid-1970s. In the late 1970s a group of local businessmen turned it into an independent cinema called “The Playhouse”. I managed it from around 1976 until 1981. It had a single screen and we would show double features for $2.00. A combination of first and second run movies. A lot of fond memories of the place. The projectionist Bill was a master at running the machines. We always had problems with the boiler room. But we had great popcorn. Still have some of the original movie posters (Jaws, Rollerball, Chinatown) from the day. It held about 600 people and had a balcony but would only use it if we sold out the first floor. Great small cinema for the Oakville downtown. Had a lot of regulars and employed students from the local high schools. Glad to see this theater listed on this site.
