I suspect “T Hetherington” was Tom Hetherington, who also ran a drive-in at nearby Balfour in the late 1940s.

This drive-in was located about half a mile north of the town on SK-25, there’s a property directly south of the hotel along this road, this is where the drive-in was. An old Google Earth image from 2012 shows the ramp marks and screen/concession building foundations. Nothing remains, a house has been built on the site.

The remains of the ticket booth can be seen on Google Street view in August 2013, the entire site has now been redeveloped as a housing estate.

There was a small drive-in located at the current address of Mahogany Drive, Galax. Its roughly between Galax and Hillsville so I guess it could be the location of the Midway?

I think this may have been a portable job, which would also explain the change in capacity, moving to a bigger space.

Probably located just off Desert Lake Frontage Road North, Boron. A 1972 aerial photo shows what look like remains of ramps, screen and concession building, now bare desert, some of the ramp formations can still be made out in the sand.

Unsurprisingly this was located in close vicinity to Fort Valley State University, the current address is Laconia Circle, Fort Valley. Present in 1955-56 aerial photos, demolished by 1973 and replaced with (student?) housing, its now currently a vacant block.

There looks to be what appears as construction of a drive-in at the present address of 813 N Main St, Estill Springs in a 1959 aerial photo however by 1980 the site is occupied by a car wrecker.

A 1955 aerial has now been uploaded and it shows nothing at the address however by 1968 a new IA-141 had been built at the location so its possible it did exist at some point after 1955 but was demolished to make way for the road?

Looks like it was operating until the mid-80’s, Southwood Inn now occupies the site.

kennerado commented about Lawco Drive-In on Jun 27, 2023 at 8:18 am

This was located at 2410 US-43, Lawrenceburg. Its present in a 1958 aerial, but by 1981 it appears (partially?) dismantled. A gas station/truck stop was built in the lower west corner, the rest of the site is a vacant lot.

I believe this one was located at 800 Market St, Cheraw. Present in 1957, completely demolished by 1968.

Found it, approximate address is now 820 St Joseph St, Arnaudville. It’s present in a 1958 aerial photo but completely demolished and replaced by houses in a 1969 aerial photo.

This was located at the current address of 659 Graves Station Rd SW, Dawson. It’s present in a 1956 aerial photo but by 1972 its been demolished and replaced by a house, possibly the beginning of the entrance road may remain.

The screen was gone by 1960, looks like it didn’t last very long at all.

kennerado commented about Chesterfield Drive-In on Jun 25, 2023 at 9:22 am

1957 and 1964 aerial photos show no sign of a drive-in at the address in the above comment, either the address is wrong or this was possibly a portable job? The address points to an empty field, which looks like its been that way ever since the ‘57 aerial.

kennerado commented about Dixie Drive-In on Jun 25, 2023 at 8:27 am

An approximate address is Elmore Road & Bellingrath Road, Elmore. A 1974 topo map indicates there was a drive-in at this location, a 1972 aerial shows faint markings but if it was closed in the late 50’s I wouldn’t expect much left at that point. Houses have now been built on the site.

Michael, the Kentwood Commercial newspaper had an ad dated 1945 however this is probably a mistake from newspapers.com

kennerado
kennerado commented about Bamberg Drive-In on Jun 20, 2023 at 3:09 am

new photos confirm Kenmore’s excellent spotting, it’s there in a 1957 aerial and almost fully demolished/partially overgrown by 1974 with the remains of the concession building remaining.

kennerado commented about Amite Drive-In on Jun 20, 2023 at 2:27 am

Found it, the approximate address was 1700 N Duncan Ave, Amite City. Newspaper ads date back to June 1945 so it was open as early as then. The drive-in is present in a 1959 aerial photo but completely demolished by 1974. Today a private residence occupies the property. Also of note is that it was advetised as “Mixon Drive-In Theatre” in that 1945 ad.
