    Duluth’s NorShor Theatre Is Ready For Its Makeover

    The long-awaited renovation likely to begin soon on centerpiece of Duluth’s arts district. Duluth has wondered when, or if, the NorShor Theatre, which has served as a vaudeville house, movie theater and strip club, would ever undergo a planned renovation to transform it into a performing arts center.

    The ambitious project dates back to 2010, when the Duluth Economic Development Authority (DEDA) paid $2.3 million to acquire the property. “It was a strip club and it was run down,” says David Montgomery, chief administrative officer for the city of Duluth. “It was really a blight” in downtown Duluth, he says.

    Holly Theatre Restoration in Line for $1 Million in State Funds

    The Oregon Legislature’s Capital Construction Subcommittee approved a $1 million appropriation during its regular session Thursday morning in Salem. The news follows an announcement Wednesday that philanthropist James Collier will pay for the building’s elevator, a six-figure gift that is the largest single gift to the restoration project.

    Renovation of Brooklyn’s Historic Kings Theatre

    CBS THIS MORNING reports from inside the Kings Theatre. The Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, New York, opened in September 1929, just over a month before the stock market crash that led to the Great Depression. The movie palace survived until 1977 then lay dormant for nearly four decades. Now, after a massive renovation, the theater has been restored to its former glory and is once again a crown jewel. Anthony Mason reports.

    Historic Theater Project Gets $5.5 Million Boost From State of Michigan

    The historic Capitol Theater in downtown Flint, Michigan, is inching its way toward renovation after getting $5.5 million from the Michigan Strategic Fund.

    The project includes an 1,800-seat theatre with 21,000-square feet of office space, State Rep. Phil Phelps, D-Flushing, said in a statement.

    1.8 Million Restoration of The Marion Palace Theatre

    The Marion Palace Theatre in Marion, Ohio is undergoing a $1.8 million restoration of the marquee, blade sign and front facade.

    Built in 1928 and renovated in 1976, this atmospheric theatre surrounds the audience with a Moorish architectural courtyard and the feeling of being entertained under twinkling stars and circulating clouds at dusk. The effect is produced by the original (reconditioned) revolutionary cloud machine in a hidden location.

    The Hill Community Development Corp. Plans Redevelopment of the New Granada Theatre

    The New Granada Theater has long been a link to the Hill District’s past, a one-time jazz hot spot that drew the likes of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington before closing and falling into disrepair.

    Now it’s ready to re-emerge as a key part of the neighborhood’s future.

    The Hill Community Development Corp. plans to issue a request for proposals seeking a partner for the redevelopment of the New Granada block on Centre Avenue, with the theater serving as the anchor, Mark Belko reports in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

    Historic Hudson Theatre to be Restored and Reopen as Broadway Playhouse

    Broadway’s historic Hudson Theatre, which opened in 1903 on West 44th Street, will be reopened and restored as a Broadway playhouse thanks to the Ambassador Theatre Group.

    The curtain will rise again for the 112-year old establishment sometime during the 2016-2017 Broadway season.

    Developer May Get Exclusive Right to Put a Dinner Theater in Historic Utah Theater

    Salt Lake City leaders are weighing an exclusive deal with a private developer on plans to refurbish the old Utah Theater on Main Street — just as Mayor Ralph Becker prepares to leave office.

    The city’s Redevelopment Agency Board, which doubles as the City Council, is set to vote Tuesday on whether to start exclusive talks on the abandoned theater with LaSalle Restaurant Group, a Utah-based firm that owns Golden Braid Books, the Oasis Cafe and other notable restaurants.
