    Theater reuse project

    Hello—

I’m a student in Savannah College of Art and Design’s Historic Preservation program and for our Economics project we have to choose a historic building needing reuse, offer ideas, and do a feasibility study.

I chose a former church, but I feel it’d lend itself to reuse as a theater—it was built like an auditorium. (In fact, it had theater seats but both they and the church have seen better days). It’s big, 8000+ sq. ft. built to seat 900 just in the sanctuary and also has a basement w/a stage. From what I’ve seen on NATO’s site, that’s maybe too big by today’s standards? I’m thinking of dividing the sanctuary (it’ll be interesting; it’s an octagon) but I know there’d be a lot of work to be done after stabilizing and cleanup—equipment, blackout/sound drapes, new seats, etc.

    Documentary on classic Hollywood cinemas

Hello, I’m lookinmg for interviewees, photos, videos of old Hollywood. I’m an independent filmmaker working on a documentary about old movie theatres in Hollywood (Iris, Warner, Pacific, Hollywood, Vogue, Grauman’s Chinese, Egyptian etc..) that have had an impact on the hollywood community, both as a symbol of Hollywood as well as the historical and heritage effects it has had on “hollywood” as an industry.

We are profiling theatres that are currently functioning as well as the obsolete. If you worked in these theatres back in the day (during their highlights) and have interesting stories to tell, photos to show, video to talk about, I would like to hear from you. Many older movie houses are being demolished due to new developments and it is important to help future generations know and understand how these movie palaces have helped shaped the Hollywood we know today.

Film Society needs info about taking over local movie theater

The film society I’m associated with is in the process of taking over the local movie theater; we’ll be hiring an operations manager to handle most of the business, building, and equipment management and maintenance. Some programming decisions made.

Does anyone have an idea of what an appropriate salary offer would be for said position? Remember: it’s a small town.

    Thanks,
    Movie Theater Emily

    What city needs a cinema?

I’ll just throw this question out there:

Can you think of a city, preferably in the Northeast, that makes you shake your head and say, “Why can’t I ever see a smaller movie in this town?” A burg that you think is just dying for a well run cinema drafthouse?

An empty movie theater in good shape is by no means a prerequisite, we’re prepared to renovate a grocery store if necessary. Having just opened a twin arthouse in a Midwest town of 80,000 we’re open to ideas, but want to move closer to family in NY.

Looking for a projectionist in NYC for photo essay/audio slideshow

I’m a photojournalist from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

I’m interested in doing a portrait of a cinema projectionist in New York City. This would be done in the form of an audio slideshow with photographs of him/her at work in the booth.

I’m looking for one who has been doing this for years, and is struggling to adapt with the changes and cuts in the movie theater business.

Call for papers - cinema distribution and exhibition…

    Hello,

I am a film and theatre (theater!) scholar from the UK. I have the honour of being the Guest Editor for a special issue of the US peer-reviewed journal, ‘Post Script’.

This special issue will focus on the less-aired aspects of cinema: distribution and exhibition. This area of study would be incomplete without an essay on picture palaces.

I have posted a call for papers for this ‘Post Script’ issue at: http://www.deanconrad.com/writing/CFP

Costs of new small town theater?

I live in a town of 3,500 people with no nearby towns for at least 25 miles that have a theater. How could I find what the demand would be for a movie theater in a county of 36,000 people? Are there still single-screen theaters running in small towns anymore? How much would it cost to build a new, single-screen theater? Bad idea? Good idea?
