    Cinema Treasures Needs Your Help!

In a few weeks, Cinema Treasures will have been online for seven years.

As many of you know, a few months ago we moved this website to a much more powerful (and expensive) server. The new server has been fantastic, and has really helped us keep up with the growth of this website and our traffic.

However, the monthly cost of maintaining this project has become more than either of us can support without additional funding. After seven years, we’ve definitely reached a point where we need your support.

Starting next week, we will begin accepting donations. As well, we’ll be including some tasteful, text-based advertisements on our pages to help offset costs. (Don’t worry… they won’t be annoying.)

All of us at Cinema Treasures are very excited about these developments because they will allow Cinema Treasures to not only keep up with our existing growth, but start adding some of the features you’ve long been requesting (like photo galleries, message boards, etc.).

If you’ve enjoyed this site over the years, please consider making a donation next week.

Thank you once again to our incredible volunteers, theater editors Bryan Krefft and Ken Roe, and blog editor, Michael Zoldessy. Their hard work and your contributions have made Cinema Treasures what it is today.

    Sincerely,
    Patrick Crowley & Ross Melnick

1,000 UK Theaters on Cinema Treasures!

The United Kingdom has become the second country (behind the United States) to have 1,000 theaters listed on Cinema Treasures. We’ve had some great milestones over the years and this one certainly ranks pretty high.

Thanks to Ken Roe, Bryan Krefft and everyone else for compiling this valuable information. Thanks to our users and the hard working CT Team, we’re well on our way to creating the ultimate cinema history resource.

    We’re back online! (again)

What started out as a simple upgrade turned out to be a much more complicated problem. And, as a result, the site was offline for most of the day.

This should really be the last of the hiccups related to our recent server move. We’re just about finished fine-tuning things.

    Thanks for your patience.

NEW SITE UPDATE: Email is coming soon!

    Hi, everyone.

Our move to a new server has been a great success. Cinema Treasures is now much faster and more reliable.

We’re still working on email, though. Please hold off on sending us any new messages… we won’t be able to receive them.

Thanks for your patience. Email should be restored soon!

We’re moving to a new server!

I’m very excited to announce that Cinema Treasures is moving to a new home tomorrow.

    Why are we moving?
Well, as you know, our website has been quite sluggish for over a year, even as we worked very hard to upgrade and optimize our server. (It doesn’t help that our traffic doubled during the same time period.)

But, since our traffic is still growing every month, we’ve outgrown our current server, and it’s time to move Cinema Treasures to a more powerful (and expensive) server.

Will the site work during the move?
Probably not. Once we switch over, the old website will be disabled to prevent new comments or theater submissions from being lost.

    When will the site return?
It’s hard to say, but our best guess is within 24 hours. Possibly much shorter, but we won’t really know until it happens.

What time will the transfer begin?
    Thursday, at approximately 3pm Pacific.

We’ll do our best to ease the pain of migrating, but do expect some bumps on the road.

Given the complexity of the transfer, please be aware that you may not be able to access Cinema Treasures for up to 24 hours.

    Best,
    Patrick

    ….

UPDATE: Looks like we’re switched over! Everything seems to be working well, except email (this will probably take another day or two). Please post your comments/feedback below.

Beloved Member Jim Rankin Passes Away

Longtime member and historic theater expert Jim Rankin has passed away.

We count ourselves among the lucky ones who had the opportunity to speak with Jim on many occasions over the years. As one of our earliest and most passionate users, the site has lost one of its most knowledgeable voices and one of its fiercest advocates. On a personal level, though, all of us who keep this site humming have lost something far more important — a good man and a good friend. Jim was always in our corner, looking out for our best interests, and keeping us and our theater pages in check.

His passion for Milwaukee and its theaters was also plain to see. If you haven’t had a chance to read some of his exquisitely detailed entries on the Pabst, Alhambra, and other Milwaukee theaters, please take a little time this morning to read some of his work.

Jim’s knowledge and theater entries truly set the gold standard.

As Louis Rugani tells us in his post, Jim will be laid to rest on Friday. Wherever you are during that day, please take a moment and reflect on his life and his contribution to the cause.

Jim’s loss will be felt today, tomorrow, and forever here at Cinema Treasures. The honor of knowing him, and the knowledge he shared with us all, are some of the lasting gifts of his life.

    Cinema Treasures hits 15,000 theaters

Hard to believe, but we’ve hit another milestone with our theater guide. 15,000 theaters!

When Ross and I started this project, we had only 100 theaters in our database and we’ve been amazed to see the site blossom into what it is today. It truly is remarkable.

Thanks to everyone who helped us get this far, most of all our long-time theater editor, Bryan Krefft.

PS: While we can’t make any announcements yet, I can tell you that next year is going to be a pretty exciting one for this project.
